Dr. Thomas Hsiao-Huei Tung, MD

I gave three attempts to see Dr. Tung. The first one he canceled, I rescheduled. That first appointment I was there on time, I got called to the room in 5 minutes of being there. Dr. Tung had been called to surgery and I was told it would be about a 30 minute wait. I waited 60 minutes and had to follow up with what the status was. No one came to my room to give me an update or to see if I wanted to reschedule. When I walked out of the room to tell them I could no longer wait, everyone was gathered around talking, the secretary looked at me as if I only waited 10 minutes. Are you sure, he will back? My time is just as important as anyone else's. I called that afternoon to reschedule for the following week. They gave me the date and time that was best for him. I showed up for that next appointment. I was 10 minutes early, I got all checked in and was sitting there. After 10 minutes of sitting in the waiting room I see Dr. Tung walk out dressed in scrubs. I wait 20 more minutes. No… one said anything to me. This now has been 30 minutes of waiting. I walked up to the secretary and ask, is Dr. Tung busy? She chuckled and said yea, he is in surgery. Oh, okay. This happened last week, was anyone going to tell me he left for surgery. She was like, well I just found out. At this time I'm mad. They act as your time isn't valuable. I wasn't a walk in, I had an appointment both times. I get that he may get called to perform surgery. But to happen both the exact same time, on the exact same day (Monday's). Very poor.

During reconstruction for mastectomy, Dr. Tung actually ripped my pectoralis major muscle from its humerus (arm) attachment. It retracted exposing my pectoralis minor muscle. This is considered a rare, violent, traumatic injury that most often happens to tackle football players or weight lifters. Yet, somehow it happened in that OR. There is no mistaking this injury. When it happens, you can actually hear it (everyone in that OR knew). The ensuing defect, a large deep depression, with a dramatic skin and underlying muscle pull from axilla to chest center, bruising , which in my case, extended from my shoulder to the near bottom of my ribs and down my arm to my elbow , are unmistakable. But Dr. Tung didn't stop there with his surgical errors. Because my muscle had been so badly damaged, my tissue expander was placed a mere half inch from my collar bone and on top of my serratus muscles… which were then crushed and trapped underneath. It gets worse. Dr. Tung then attempted to stitch a useless strip (a half inch wide rectangle) of alloderm graft to all of my now out of place and/or crushed chest muscles. My graft was 2 inches too high. My tissue expander was the wrong size and the wrong kind. While in my hospital room , I was seen by no less than 6 surgical residents, none of whom even "noticed" my damaged muscles and the gross defect. When I told the chief resident I was having shoulder muscle spasms (another clue) , he informed me that "NO" I must be having spasms down the front of my chest. Clueless. The plastic surgery resident arrived (she was in the OR) and couldn't answer any of my questions and only informed me that no one knew if I would need chemo or not. No Board Certified surgeon (plastic or general , at least I hope not, because they were so bad) saw me before I was discharched from the hospital. My muscle damage is the permanent. The optimal time for repair is 3 weeks. I should have told, so that I could have made an informed decision about any surgical repairs. Instead, I now have at least a 40 percent function loss due to surgical errors and the non existent skill and training level of the doctors at Siteman.

I had a double mastectomy with tram flap. He had to re-open my abdomen in dec to drain the fluid. when he did this he chose to take off extra skin and tissue without letting myself or family know this causing problems with my lower abdomen. When asked if he was going to fix it he said there was nothing he could do and proceeded to tell me that this was what I asked for. He was more concerned with doing just my breasts that I now have to have removed because of infection. I am the walking poster adult of what not to do and would not recommend this surgery at all. He was very rude and disrespectful during my last visit and I would not return to him for anything.

I would not recommend Dr. Tung. He performed surgery on my face for a health issue. A resident assisted him during the surgery. I am still having issues, although less. In a follow up appt. he recognized everything was probably not completed correctly during the surgery. He could tell from looking at my face and running little "tests." In addition, I have an ugly scar. I hope from the resident, but I have to either live with this or pay out of pocket to get it corrected...as ins will not cover. Very unhappy. Why didn't he fix the residents poor sewing job during the surgery? This is my face! I am young and do not want to look in the mirror and see this everyday. I trusted him.
