Dr. Thoo Huat Tan, DO

I was referred to Dr. Tan by my primary care provider for fibroids and abnormal bleeding. He determined I wouldn’t have issues and placed my IUD at that time. Since then, I’ve seen him a couple of times for pain and heavy bleeding, but each time, he was dismissive of my concerns and offered no meaningful evaluation. Most recently, I experienced a serious episode of severe bleeding that led to an ER visit, anemia, and the expulsion of my IUD. Since then, the bleeding has gotten even worse, which is why I returned to him again for follow-up. I explained that it’s been incredibly difficult to work or function like this, but he still refused to order imaging (“We can’t just be doing ultrasounds all day”) or do any further examination. Instead, he told me to “live with it” because “no one dies from bleeding,” or have an hysterectomy if it bothers me. He added that I could always get “what’s called a second opinion.” I intend to, because fibroids, especially at the sizes of mine, can be… surgically removed, and as a woman in my 30s, I don’t believe getting rid of my uterus is in my best interest. I left feeling belittled and completely unheard. It’s especially concerning that a provider who is in such high demand — due to a shortage of OB/GYNs in the area — is this insensitive to his patients’ ailments. I would not recommend this provider to anyone who is looking for actual care, instead of just having uterine bleeding mansplained to you and being dismissed for being a woman with female health issues.
