Summary
Their marriage is a prime exampleof the phrase, "never say never"as Dr. Cashion, who is a born andbred Texas Aggie, swore growingup he would never marry a TexasLonghorn. Well, as fate wouldhave it, Dr. Cody is a TexasLonghorn.
Dr. Cashion first considereddentistry in elementary school. Heremembers being teased for having spaces or gapsbetween his teeth. He knows what it is like to always be selfconscious about your smile and the lack of confidence thatcan bring. He asked his orthodontist about braces but theorthodontist told Tim his bite was fine and that he shouldtalk to his dentist about a new procedure being donecalled bonding (this was the early 80's). That decisionchanged his life. He had cosmetic bonding done to closethe spaces and make a fuller smile. He remembers thefreedom it brought to not have to cover his teeth every timehe smiled. That one dental appointment cemented hisdecision to pursue dentistry as a career.
Dr. Cody never thought she'd end up a dentist!! Herchildhood …dentist did not believe in anesthetic. Ouch! Thatleft her petrified and she freely admits she was probablyone of the worst patients because of her fear. It wasn't untilshe was in college that she went to a wonderful dentist anddiscovered dental visits could be pain-free, even pleasant.Maybe that is why she is obsessed with finding new andbetter ways to make dentistry comfortable and pain-free:like having movie goggles to watch videos duringprocedures, new anesthetic that is liquid and squirtedunder the gum for regular and deep cleanings - no shotnecessary. Dr. Cody has the topical cream to numb thegums, specially formulated and made at the compoundingpharmacist. She couldn't find anything on the market thatworked well enough. Plus all the high tech equipment thatmakes every job easier, just to name a few.
Dr. Cody's special interest is orthodontics. Erin, theirdaughter, needed braces due to severely overcrowdedteeth. Most orthodontists she talked to wanted to pull someof Erin's teeth. Having that done herself when she was ateenager, she knew there had to be a better way. Dr. Codydecided there and then if she couldn't have her daughtertreated the way she wanted, she would do it herself. Thusbegan the new passion of her career! After hundreds ofhours of orthodontic training, she established a goal of non-extraction braces whenever possible. Erin has a gorgeoussmile!!! Well worth the study and dedication.
As an adjunct to their busy general family practice, thedoctors have a special interest in treating special needschildren. Their son, Neal, has Down syndrome and theyknow the difficulties parents can face getting dentaltreatment. The doctors have a thorough knowledge of theanatomy and physiology of the special needs child. Oftenthere is severe crowding, no room for the tongue (resultingin subsequent speech problems) and deep palates. Theirgoal is to develop the jaws to the proper size, align theteeth, and make room for the tongue which improvesbreathing. Thus, not only is form improved (appearance)but also function.
This extra knowledge benefits patients but also providestremendous satisfaction for the doctors. It is withcompassion and gratitude that Dr. Cashion and Dr. Codyserve their patients. Giving the best care for everyone iswhat it is all about.
Dr. Cashion and Dr. Cody have started a non-profit 501c3 called Changing Minds Foundationto support further research and treatment of individualswith Down syndrome. To see the activities visitwww.changingmindsfoundation.org
