Dr. Tomasz Adam Wiraszka, MD

I have nearly a identical experience to another reviewer here only I didn't listen to my instincts and friends when the told me not to go back after a rushed laser surgery 'Dr' Wiraszka preformed on my left eye. Without much explanation or time to think he told me I had a torn retina and pulled out a box from a back room as if it was just purchased from Amazon. Apparently this was the piece of equipment he was to use to laser my retina back on. He injected a gas bubble into my eye and sent me home to recover with not much comment. When I asked questions he made me feel like I was over curious and overreacting. The procedure didn't take and I tried to see someone on call over the weekend but they pushed me off until Monday. When I saw him again he said it looked fine. I was relieved but the crescent was still there so I was confused. About a week later he saw the crescent again but this time decided it was a crisis and that I needed a vitrectomy because I didn't 'handle the in… office laser treatment well' . Against my own gut instincts but terrified to lose my vision I agreed to have this procedure. I have never been in more pain in my life than I was after this surgery. When I went in to see him for a follow up I told him I had distinct loss of vision in a rectangular shape in my peripheral vision he had no comment. When I pressed for an answer about it he quickly said 'Oh. Well that's permanent. We can't do anything about that.' and quickly ended my appointment and left the room. I also have what is call a blown pupil from the procedure where my pupil no longer gets small so light blinds me. He did give me a script to try and force the pupil to un-dialate but it only worked for an hour or two so he told me it was likely permanent as well. When I left my last appointment they scheduled me for my next follow up that I decided I would never return for. Feeling completely violated at this point with no compassion and some very vague and forced answers. It turned out it didn't matter because he left town rather abruptly without word shortly after that appointment. It didn't surprised me at all. His general demeanor is quite like a man on the run. When I told family and friends about the experience as it was happening they couldn't believe I kept going back. I think I was scared to start over somewhere else and really wanted to trust him. I am currently dealing with a deteriorating retina and I am told I can't be helped. I am writing this so no one ever goes to this doctor again. Too many people have had similar stories to ignore this. If my vision was saved I might not be writing this and he would just be a really bad dr for comfort and compassion reasons but he does real damage in my opinion and doesn't seem to care.

My son had a 2:30 appointment, the assistant dailated his eyes, and we sat there for about a half hour after and still haven’t been seen by the doctor. Even though people who checked in AFTER us were being seen by him prior. I wouldn’t recommend him to anybody.

I saw Dr. Wiraszka after suddenly experiencing flashers and floaters in my eye. It was over an hour wait to see him. He told me I had a hole in my retina and it was a good thing I came because it could detach and make my blind. (It is true but he made it seem like it could happen any second.) He really scared me. Then told me he could do laser surgery to fix it. He asked me if someone had driven me and when I said no, he said that's ok we don't really need something. He kind of mumbled it and I couldn't hear and when I asked him he just said no worries, I'll be fine and to just go sign the paperwork out front and he'd be back. I was really nervous because I had no idea what the procedure he was talking about entailed. But I was worried if I didn't do it I'd end up blind. He made it sound like it needed to be done that instant. When I went to sign the paper the woman out front at the desk said oh my gosh, he is doing another one?When the doctor came back in I had a million… questions running through my head. I realize I should have spoken up and demanded more info but I was nervous and scared and it just all happened so fast. He started looking at my eye again and telling me to look different ways and did not even tell me what he was doing as he did it. All of a sudden I just had this yellow explosion in my eye and I'm thinking I guess he is doing the laser now! When I recently had a laser procedure at the dentist he explained every step he was doing and I guess I just thought Dr. Wiraszka would do the same. He had a very odd manor and didn't talk much. I told myself then that maybe he was just really gifted and good at what he does and just didn't have the warm personality. As soon as he was done he started to just leave. I still had questions!! I started asking him if there were things I shouldn't do. He replied no waterpolo??? No rugby?? I told him I had plans to golf that afternoon and he said that was fine. I was trying to ask what to expect or be on the lookout for and he quickly said more flashers and floaters and then left. I certainly did not feel up to golfing later! Driving home was not fun. I went home and rested. The next day I still kept having flashers and floaters. Then when I told my sister about what happened she asked about his reviews. When I saw them, especially the one about blinding the man, I got even more scared. That night I had a lot of flashes and my eye was sore and scratchy so I ended up going to Mass Eye and Ear in Boston to their ER. They were wonderful in there. They told me I would have the floaters forever but they would settle down and be less noticeable. They told me the flashers would slowly get better. I chose to see a doctor from there for my follow up and he told me that my hole had been very small and I might have not even needed the laser. Oh and when I got a copy of my record from that day with Dr. Wiraszka it was full of errors. It said we discussed all this stuff we never discussed and even said I had something that I didn't have. I was relieved that I had decided not to go back. One note, everyone else that I came in contact with at the Eye and Lasik Center in Gardner was wonderful! Very friendly and helpful and I loved the atmosphere there. I would go back there but not to this doctor but I just got a notice in the mail that he is changing jobs again to yet another state. He was in Texas before he came to MA.

Wiraszka performed Scleral buckle with retinal cropexy to repair my retinal tear in lower eye. He completely missed the tear in lower eye and tip of the cryopexy probe scarred the ‘center’ of my eye. Never having eye issues, I believed that the surgery needed to be done quickly and that it was routine. Neither where true. Don’t be rushed and believe it’s a routine procedure. Choose your ophthalmologist very wisely. Tomasz Wiraszka is overconfident, unwelcoming and condescending when faced with inquiries/questions. Showed little or no remorse for 'missing' the tear. Seven months later, currently undergoing 4th surgery with the world’s best ophthalmologist in hopes of regaining some vision. Absolutely heartbreaking to me and my family that the all this could have been avoided had I chosen the most qualified doctor. Hopefully, someday I will see again and be able to enjoy the simple activities I never thought I'd be unable to do, like throwing a baseball with my son. Again, take… your time and chose your doctor wisely.

Extremely competent and personable. Repaired my eyeball and restored my sight. Got me through difficult time after injuring my eye. My thanks.
