My daughter brought my 3-year-old granddaughter in for a visibly swollen, discolored leg that was larger and firmer than the other. Instead of investigating or showing any sense of urgency, this doctor glanced at it and said, “Well, it’s not that swollen today, so just keep an eye on it.” That was his entire assessment. Only after my daughter specifically asked, “Can we get a blood test?” did he agree. There was no proactive concern, no explanation of what could cause unilateral swelling in a toddler, no differential, no plan. No labs or imaging were even suggested until a parent had to push for them. When a child presents with something abnormal and unexplained, “wait and see” should not be the default! Especially without ruling out infection, clotting issues, or other serious causes. Parents should not have to prompt a pediatrician to investigate a potentially concerning symptom. Dismissing a parent’s concern is not care. It’s complacency. If you want a pediatrician who actively… evaluates and advocates for your child, look elsewhere. Your instincts as a parent matter. Don’t let them be brushed off.
