Although this review is lengthy but it really worth reading until the last word.
Let me preface my review by saying that this is not a review of Dr. Victoria Desantos herself, although I believe that her staff may have her approval, since they claimed that these are the office rules, but I wanted to say that upfront to be fair, since we were indirectly denied service after taking our medical insurance information.
My honest recommendation based on my own experience, my wife and my kids is to stay away from Dr. Desantos’ 2 staff members, who have been nothing but unprofessional, talking down to me, my wife and by extension our kids.
On May 4th, 2022 my wife who is 4 months pregnant, and who is considered a high risk pregnancy candidate had an appointment at Dr. Victoria Desantos office in West Orange, NJ, we walked in with expectation of high quality and professional customer service, which is expected by default from any medical facility, but unfortunately we were shocked by what we… witnessed.
Right at the entrance of the office at suite 202, right before I even got close to the front desk to introduce my wife and my self as her husband and the translator for her conversation with the doctor as I always do, a lady at the front desk who I could not get her name, she is in her maybe her late 50s to early 60s, wearing eye glasses and was sitting at the right side of the front desk when I walked into suite 202, she pointed with her finger at me and with a firm closer to rude tone, she said: Sir can I help you? We only allow one person with the patient, we can’t have you all in here, by all she means, my wife who is the patient in this case, me who is her husband and the translator in this case and our 6 years old and 2 years old daughters.
In my head I assumed that she does not know my relationship to the patient and went on politely explaining to her my role and that it will be hard to have the kids waiting outside on their own since they are only 2 and 6 years old, she responded that these are the office rules even before I finish my sentence with the same firm rude voice tone.
Then she proceeded to say you should wear masks, I said do you have masks? So with her bare hands she hands 4 masks to me without any protective material covering the masks, which means her hands that was touching the keys on the keyboard and who knows what else she touched, touched the masks that we should be breathing their fabric for the entire visit with her bare hands, but I did not want to create a disturbance by refusing the masks and to comply with the office rules as she kept repeating, so I went ahead and wore mine and gave my wife and the kids masks to wear.
Then she proceeded to say you should cover your noses with the masks, I explained that I have a heart condition, which in reality should allow me not to wear any mask, but I still covered my mouth out of respect and courtesy, but she did not even answer me when I mentioned the heart condition but proceeded to point at her nose as this is the only thing that can happen and that is to cover my nose, so I went ahead and covered mine again to keep things calm, although my voice asking all these questions in frustration may have gave it away that I was upset with the unprofessional treatment.
Then a second heavy set lady comes out and she has a conversation with the receptionist and goes ahead and says the same thing to my pregnant wife to cover her nose, now I am sure to all the pregnant women out there you know how breathing becomes hard when you are pregnant and the smell of any thing can make you vomit, my wife had that condition and that is why she could not cover her nose, but even though I asked my wife to please cover her nose just to keep things in order so she did.
After all of the above the heavy set office staff lady at Dr. Victoria Desantos office asked for only the patient to stay and I explained that I have to stay to translate so she proceeded asking to have the kids wait in the waiting room, of course that did not make any sense to me to leave a 6 years old and a 2 years old on their own not even for one second not alone for the length of a doctor’s visit, so I answered with a firm tone to as why are we being talked to as some sort of second class citizens, I have never been treated like that in any medical facility and did not dawn on me until after I left that maybe because my wife was wearing the traditional muslim head hair cover, because I felt some animosity in the voice tone when those 2 staff members were talking to us but I did not put my finger on it then, but honestly it felt very demeaning, so I asked my wife to leave and let us find another doctor.
When my wife started preparing the kids to leave we could hear them both staff members whispering that this what they preferred and said let them go.
I have employees myself and I will never allow them to talk to any customer like that and I am not in the medical business even, this is very unprofessional, we felt uncomfortable, felt like an outcast and being marginalized by Dr. Victoria Desantos staff, I hope no one will have to go through this again at Dr. Victoria Desantos office, and that receptionist I mentioned earlier and the heavy set lady with the blond color short hair should get some kind of training in customer service.
That was a very bad experience and I will never go to Dr. Victoria Desantos practice again!
Thank you.
