Our son was born on April 8, 2023, weighing a healthy 8 lbs 7 oz, just under one month prior to his due date. Although there were some initial concerns that warranted his admission to the NICU, including his mother's type 1 diabetes and low blood sugar levels, subsequent assessments and evaluations showed his condition to be stable and not requiring extended hospitalization. Despite our son's progress and the absence of any significant health risks, the hospital staff refused to discuss a discharge plan with us. We expressed our concerns about the importance of bonding time with parents for our newborn's mental development, but instead of addressing our apprehensions, the doctor became hostile, threatening us with reports to the Department of Human Services (DHS) and the potential removal of our custody rights. It is deeply disheartening to experience such treatment in a healthcare institution that is meant to prioritize patient well-being and rights. As patients, we expected better.
