As someone diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 18 and now living with it for over a decade, I was shocked and deeply hurt by the way this doctor treated me during a recent flare-up. I came in experiencing severe pain and advocated for what I know works for my body—something I’ve unfortunately had to do many times over the years due to medication tolerance that builds up over time. Instead of being treated with empathy or understanding, I was labeled as exhibiting “drug seeking behavior” in my medical notes. This kind of judgmental language is not only offensive but shows a disturbing lack of awareness around chronic illness and pain management. Crohn’s pain does not always show up clearly in tests—any specialist should know that. To suggest my symptoms were “out of proportion” was both dismissive and insulting. Doctors should listen to their patients and treat them with compassion—not suspicion. If this provider had any real understanding of Crohn’s, he would know how damaging and… disheartening this kind of approach can be to someone already in pain. I would not recommend this doctor to anyone with a chronic illness who is looking for support, trust, or respectful care.
