Dr. Virginia Garay, MD

Do not go to this doctor. I have been with her for almost 8 years and before this year I would have recommended her to anyone. This year she has cancelled appointments month after month, usually the day of, and makes NO attempt to reschedule. She is taking minimum a month to fill prescriptions, and even placed me on FMLA and changed medicines without ever keeping a following up appointment, which I find unethical and the opposite of how a Doctor handles patients. She has has left her patients with no resources for help as she slowly closes her practice and refuses to respond to messages left with assistance, to emails or even to calls to her emergency after hours phone.

I would give Dr. Garay 0 stars if I could, which is too bad, because I actually liked her as a person (the one appointment I had with her). Here's why I can't recommend her: -Initial appointment that I had scheduled over 6 weeks out: Her assistant, Heidi, called me day of to cancel because Dr. Garay had the flu. Okay, fine. It was frustrating, but I understood. We rescheduled for 2 weeks later. - Rescheduled initial appointment #1: While Heidi had emailed me their new office address, I was filling out the initial paperwork right before my appointment and typed the address listed on the paperwork into my GPS. Turns out they hadn't updated the paperwork with the new office address so I went to the wrong office. When I called and explained, I got no apology from Heidi for their error, and she couldn't reschedule me for another month because of the holidays. At this point I desperately tried to find another psychiatrist, but apparently finding a psychiatrist taking new patients in… Austin is next to impossible, and I was unsuccessful. -Rescheduled initial appointment #2: This appointment actually happened! This was the highlight of my time with Dr. Garay. I liked her demeanor and I found her to be thorough. I walked out with a prescription to try and a scheduled follow-up for 1 month later. I left thinking, "Okay, the start was rough, but this could be a good working relationship." -Follow-up appointment: Day of, Heidi calls to tell me Dr. Garay is running so late that she won't be able to see me for my 10:00 AM appointment. I found this odd, but didn't have much of a choice in the matter, so I rescheduled for a couple weeks later. -Rescheduled follow-up appointment #1: Day of, Heidi calls to tell me Dr. Garay has been "summoned into court" so she won't be able to see me that day. I am an attorney and so is my husband. Neither of us could think of ANY circumstances where you would be summoned into court DAY OF with no notice. That is just not a thing (unless you've been arrested or broke your probation). Which leads me to conclude either this was a made-up excuse, or she already knew she had a court date that day and forgot to put it on her calendar. I begrudgingly rescheduled my appointment for another couple weeks out. -Rescheduled follow-up appointment #2 (today): This morning, Heidi called to tell me that Dr. Garay wouldn't be in the office today and we need to reschedule again. She didn't even bother to give a reason this time for the erratic behavior and just said she was sorry. I responded that I would not be rescheduling because cancelling on me 3 times in a row over the course of a month and a half is absolutely unacceptable. She apologized again and I hung up the phone. I honestly have no idea how often Dr. Garay works vs how often she just doesn't bother to show up to work. I'm not sure what is going on in her life that she would be cancelling this many appointments. What I do know is that I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone become her patient. Especially because she is a psychiatrist and psychiatric patients can be deeply harmed by unreliable practitioners like this. Go elsewhere.

She doesn't list her fax # and she is nice but she doesnt help me with biofeedback, cognitive therapy. I feel worst off thab ever. She is nice but is too busy with her family.

She is caring and professional. I recommend her.
