Dr. Virginia L Houserman, MD

Dr. Houserman is wonderful! She helped my husband and I complete our family. She and her staff are compassionate and caring. I would highly recommend Dr. Houserman to anyone who is struggling with Infertility.

I used Dr. Houserman through the ART clinic in Birmingham. I never felt really comfortable with her as my primary physician there. Her bedside manner is not the best but I do believe she is very knowledgeable about her field of choice. She often promoted IVF to us with their money back guarantee program in place. It seemed that this was what she wanted more than we did. Finally, I spent a week in the hospital after an insemination procedure that went horribly wrong. After this, I was told there was nothing that could be done for me and that my reproductive organs were no longer healthy. I learned differently when I went back to my regular OBGYN. I was very disappointed that I didn't follow my gut instinct to get another opinion from another specialist.

On my FIRST visit, I was examined by everyone BUT Dr Houserman. The Nurse Practioner did my pelvic exam, Dr. Houserman only reviewed the notes. Subsequent visits were no different. The reason for my surgery was insufficiently diagnosed: after the surgery, during my video follow up, I was told one of the fibroids was not completely removed due to its position in the uterine lining. I would have viewed the need for surgery differently had I known the positioning of that fibroid. As it is, I have only had one "regular and timely" period since my surgery. I was supposed to redo a test after my surgery but it must be scheduled on the first day of my cycle; if I could determine that then I would have the test.While age may be a factor (I'm 41), I am physically fit (a job mandate), so healing time was fast and amount of pain was less. Dr. Honea's (Dr Houserman was off for the weekend)bedside visits during my hospitalization were more comforting, as she appears to be open to more than just… western medicine (Dr Houserman made a placating face when I attempted to discuss my non-traditional coping methods; all of which had worked in the previous circumstance).
