Summary
About Walter Osorio
Nurse Practitioner Walter Osorio says he always knew he wanted to help people feel better and increase their quality of life. “I became attracted to the complexity of critical care and quickly bonded with many patients and families in need,” he says.
As an NP, Walter is an extension of the medical team. He works in conjunction with the doctors to orchestrate the best evidence-based care possible for patients suffering with medical trauma.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from IUSB and his Master of Science in Nursing, Adult Gerontology Acute Care, from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Clinical rotations were in Emergency Medicine, Medical ICU and Trauma Service. Additionally, he has worked in higher education as a professor and clinical instructor, and in Intensive Care at a regional medical center as a Critical Care Nurse.
While he says he is often asked why he is so attracted to emergency and critical care medicine, the choice for …him was obvious. “Trauma serviced offered everything I was looking for to begin a fulfilling career. It provided complex patients while working with a vulnerable population,” he says.
Walter’s philosophy is to be honest, compassionate and relentless in his care of patients. He practices with the most recent evidence-based tactics while taking into account fears and worries his patients may have.
“I hope to bring a wholistic approach to medicine to ensure my patients feel safe and heard,” he says. “Sometimes taking one more minute at bedside will improve the patient-provider relationship.”
In his own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents and brothers. We moved to the United States in early 2000s with two changes of clothes, in the middle of winter, without knowing English. My parents worked/continue to work so hard to provide for our family. Their work ethic and passion for life is unmatched and I owe everything to them.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I was a cook and server at Steak and Shake. I learned some really cool spatula tricks that I still do when I grill at home. I also remember buying a milkshake after every shift, it made my day much better.
What is your favorite food? Movie? Favorite food: I love authentic Chinese food
Favorite movie: I love anything with Will Ferrell (Step Brothers, Elf, etc.)
What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? My best subject growing up was always chemistry. I used to love math, but as I started calculus and physics in college, I quickly realized that was not my interest.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? My cousins in Colombia. We were very close before we moved to the United States. Now we are all married and have children. I would love to sit down and catch up with them in person.
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I am passionate about my family and friends. I love spending time with my wife and two sons.
What are your hobbies, interests? Sports. I still play soccer when my knees allow it. When I am not playing soccer, I like grilling and doing hard landscaping at home.
Do you have pets? Not at the moment but I like big dogs. I had an English Mastiff growing up and we recently had a 175-pound Great Dane.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I was born in Colombia and moved to Indiana when I was 13.
