Dr. Walter Jacques Trautman, MD

Dr. Trautman was terrible with my son and I would never let him near my kids again. My 5 year old son was having some cavities taken care of and the dentist recommended an anesthesiologist. We prepared for the appointment by having lots of conversations about how this visit would go- with a mask for his face, taking a nap at the office, etc. He was looking forward to the visit and completely calm and positive when we went in. Throughout the question and answer part of the appointment, Ben was friendly and cooperative. Dr. Trautman asked him what his favorite animal was (tiger) and then made up a story about a tiger walking up to Ben and breathing in his face. Ben was fine and followed Dr Trautman to the procedure room. Ben was hesitant when he saw all the equipment and needed a moment to take it all in. Dr Trautman swung him up on the table and the nurses wrapped him in a towel. Ben was still in a sitting position and started to turn to me and said “I don’t want this to be real,” and I… stepped forward to comfort him. Before I could reassure him or anything, Dr Trautman pushed Ben back on the table, told the nurses to grab his legs and shoved the face mask on Ben very forcefully. Ben was immediately startled and terrified and started trying to fight them off. I stepped forward to try to comfort him, but he was terrified and screaming for help until he fell asleep. Later, when Ben woke up, he was screaming and terrified and trying to fight everyone off again. I understand that people will react differently to the medication, but he was only screaming that he needed to get away from the mean man who hurt him and made him smell tiger breath. Dr. Trautman didn’t take even 10 seconds to reassure Ben and show him the equipment, even when Ben clearly was willing to cooperate but wanted to know what was happening to him. He honestly didn’t even treat Ben like a human once he was on that table, he slammed him back and forced the mask on his face in one motion. There was absolutely no need for such force and Ben remembers it all. He keeps asking me why the doctor asked him his favorite animal just so that he could play a mean joke on him.

He was awesome! Dr Trautman provided anesthesia for my 5 yr old son's dental work. He created a whole story about traveling back in time to the dinosaurs (after asking my son if he liked dinos) and explained my son would need to roar like a t-Rex into the mask. I was so impressed with him!!

Dr. Trautman was recommended by our Pediatric Dentist who was scheduled to perform oral surgery (ankylosed tooth) on my 9 year old daughter. All staff spoke very highly of him and getting an appt set up went smoothly. I had discussed with both dentist and Dr. Trautmans office (not him directly) my daughters extreme anxiety about being put to sleep (she's never had ANY kind of medical/dental procedure) and that it's taken us months to prepare her for this, and I was assured that Dr. Trautman was wonderful.Day of surgery, after waiting 2 1/2 hours, we finally meet Dr. Trautman and exchange introductions and any last minute questions. My daughter was then escorted into the procedure room, picked up and placed in the chair (she's 9) and within about 30 seconds, had BP cuff in place, pulse ox on her finger, electrodes placed on her torso (with no explanation and monitor beeping loudly as her pulse was racing) and before she was even completely laying down, Dr. Trautman swings the mask up… from behind her head and aggressively put it on her face. It felt/looked like an ambush and she completely reacted as such. He forcibly held the mask on her face despite her reaction. I had to tell him to stop and wait and the first thing he told me was that I may have to leave the room. Then, while my husband and I were trying to calm our daughter down, he kept interjecting completely unhelpful things that would just upset her more. All this didn't even last 4-5 minutes, and he was visibly impatient with us. I understand he was obviously behind in the days schedule, but no way did that justify his behavior. I also realize that my daughter may never have completely calmed and allowed a mask to be put on her face, but he never even gave her a chance to be ready, not once did he talk to her like a human being and ask her or reassure her.His treatment of my daughter was completely absent of patience, understanding or compassion.While I cannot comment on his skill as an actual anesthesiologist, HE SHOULD IN NO WAY BE WORKING WITH CHILDREN!!!!! I have a hard time believing that this was an isolated incident and no other person, ESPECIALLY A CHILD, should be subjected to such unprofessional, aggressive treatment.My trust in the dentist for even referring him is questioned now as well.

EXCEPTIONAL! Showed me what was going on with my spine, answered all questions, very patient and very down to earth. Before he did anything regarding the epidural, he told me before he proceeded.
