Summary

Wayne Myles, DDS Dr. Myles earned his BA in biology at SUNY Binghamton in 1986, then he went on to receive his DDS at Georgetown Dental School in 1990. He has continued to advance his education by completing coursework from the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, where he completed extensive hands-on training in comprehensive cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Myles is an advocate of neuromuscular dentistry, so every smile he creates is built on a solid, healthy foundation. His Reston dental practice has served patients in Fairfax and Northern Virginia since 1997. PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY ON DENTAL CARE I remember back in high school looking through books on choosing a career. None of them really caught my eye, so I tried something a bit different. I listed the things that I enjoyed and was fairly good at doing. Then I matched them to the list of careers in which I had some interest. I knew I wanted to help people with regard to their health, as well as make them feel and look better. I wanted to have the opportunity to use technology and science, and be creative and artistic at the same time. Dentistry matched these goals. Now when people ask me what I do, I simply tell them “I change people’s lives.” When asked to elaborate, I tell them that people come in looking to restore their mouths to a beautiful, healthy, youthful appearance.  It may be due to years of neglect, or simply wanting to improve the health of their mouths. I help them achieve this goal. When I see the finished case and the smiles and sincere thanks from my patients for giving them something they thought they would never have — a gorgeous smile — I realize I have made a difference in their life. Many of the patients later respond by saying they never realized that in all their old photos that they never smiled. Now they can’t stop smiling. Their new smile truly changed their lives. After practicing for nearly ten years, I took it upon myself to create the practice of my dreams. — A comprehensive, aesthetic, five-star service. Having participated with different insurance companies and diagnosing patients based on their policies and not their true dental needs and desires, I made a commitment to never let an unqualified third party (insurance clerk) dictate the needs of my patients. I knew if patients wanted to use my services that I would have to differentiate myself from all the other dentists. I decided to pursue the ultimate in treatment care by attending courses at the renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies to perfect the art of advanced dentistry. Since this journey began, I have now completed advanced training that few practicing dentists and even the majority of cosmetic dentists have completed. These courses include Advanced Anterior Aesthetics, Advanced Posterior Aesthetics, Masters Level Comprehensive Aesthetics, Full Mouth Neuromuscular Reconstruction (see Neuromuscular Dentistry article), Occlusion levels I, II, III, IV, and Advanced Computerized Electromyography (muscle activity) and Joint Analysis, and scan interpretation. This gave me the necessary skills and knowledge to support my mission and differentiate myself from other dentists.  But this alone was not enough. I thought that if I treat people the way I would want to be treated, then I truly would have the ultimate practice. However, there is a fundamental flaw with this philosophy. People want to be treated the way “they” want to be treated, not the way “I” want to be treated. For this reason, I have developed a system to customize all patient visits. I interview every patient and always ask them what they look for in a dentist. Following that, I perform a thorough exam, which includes checking for oral cancer, making sure there are no gum problems, evaluating the muscles, bite, and joint, evaluating old restorations, check for decay, and finally examine your necessary x-rays. Then I digitally photograph your mouth so I can give you a virtual tour of your mouth, as seen through my eyes. When indicated, I even image your potential new smiles. I
