I caught Lyme Disease which went into my spinal cord causing Transverse Myelitis, paralysing me from the chest down to my feet. I was misdiagnosed by other neurologists at the same hospital even though I've been a nurse for 20+ years and pulled the deer tick off of my body myself a month before. One resident even told me that I couldn't have Lyme because they had not treated a patient for Lyme at that hospital before. What?? I threatened to leave the hospital and go to Madison if I could not be seen by a qualified doctor. They finally called in Dr. Peltier. She not only knew something about Lyme, she also sat in my hospital room and listened to my story from the camping trip when I found the tick to my misdiagnosis at the first sign of illness at another hospital, to my then present paralysis. She was surprised, as I was, that no one had ordered a lumbar puncture since my paralysis was acute and she ordered one immediately. I had been lying in that hospital bed 2 weeks before they… finally let me see Dr. Peltier. The other doctors wanted me to go home in a wheelchair and just accept my diagnosis of TM and "deal with it". I'm glad I refused to do that. Dr. Peltier indeed found that my spinal fluid was, "full of Lyme" as she put it. She immediately ordered a PICC line and proper antibiotic treatment. Within one week I was starting to walk with a walker and stand-by assistance when before I couldn't move my legs at all. I truly believe Dr. Peltier saved my life as the numbness and paralysis was spreading before I received the proper antibiotics. Thank God they let me see her.
