Summary

Dr. William Hunter, MD | Back, Spine & Brain specialist
Dr. Hunter is a board-certified neurosurgeon with over a decade of clinical and teaching experience. A respected lecturer at Duke University, he travels nationally to teach minimally invasive spine techniques.
Expertise offered:
  • Lumbar Spinal Stenosis: Gradual narrowing of the spinal canal that compresses nerve roots, often causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the legs.
  • Degenerative Scoliosis: Abnormal curvature of the spine developing with age as intervertebral discs and facet joints deteriorate, leading to misalignment.
  • Chronic Back and Neck Pain: Persistent pain lasting several weeks or longer that may require targeted evaluation and treatment beyond simple rest.
  • Herniated Disks: When the soft inner core of an intervertebral disc protrudes through its outer wall, pressing on nearby nerve roots and causing pain or neurological symptoms.
  • Degenerative Spondylolisthesis: Forward slipping of one vertebra over another due to degeneration of facet joints or stress fractures, often leading to spinal instability.
  • Lumbar Degenerative Disk Disease: Age-related “wear and tear” of intervertebral discs, marked by annular tears and loss of disc height, which can result in pain and stiffness.
  • Ruptured Intervertebral Disks: A full-thickness tear in the disc’s outer wall that allows the nucleus pulposus to herniate, provoking nerve irritation.
  • Spondylosis, Spinal Injuries & Tumors: General degeneration of spinal discs and joints (spondylosis), plus management of traumatic injuries and neoplastic conditions affecting the spine.
Education & experience:
After earning a B.A. in Biology from Denison University (Ohio), he completed an M.S. in Physiology & Biophysics and his medical degree at Georgetown University, where he also finished his neurosurgical residency. He began his academic career as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin, training residents and medical students in brain and spine disease management. He later transitioned to private practice as a spine surgeon.
Gaston Memorial Hospital
Dr. Hunter spearheaded the adoption of innovative microsurgical techniques for spine care. Under his leadership, the hospital was recognized as “Best Hospital in North Carolina” and developed a leading spine program. Quality patient care is Dr. Hunter’s passion; he became board-certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons in 2001.

Ensuring Data Transparency and Trust: A Guide to Vitals Doctor Listings and Reviews

Our provider data is gathered directly from physicians and publicly available databases. Providers who verify their profiles gain the ability to update information, offering additional details about their specialties, education, treated conditions, performed procedures, and accepted insurances.

Reviews on Vitals are submitted by users only. Recognizing the valuable insights these reviews offer into a doctor's reputation, we maintain internal policies and protocols to ensure the quality and accuracy of all reviews. Importantly, providers cannot delete or alter reviews independently. Reviews can only be deleted or changed following an internal assessment by our customer service team.

Your feedback is highly valued and we encourage you to contact our support team should you encounter any issues.
