Dr. William Kanter is the most caring, compassionate physician I have ever come in contact with. His bedside manner is so incredible, I can’t even begin to find words to capture the level of empathy and sincerity he genuinely expresses towards others. It’s truly something that one can only experience themselves to fully comprehend...and even then, it’s still so hard to believe. Dr. Kanter is in a league of his own...the exception, and not the rule. Simply put, he is a wonderful individual, both, professionally and personally.
I can honestly say that I have never felt so cared for or confident in a medical provider in my entire life! Dr. Kanter is highly qualified, incredibly competent, and has a wealth of knowledge in the field of plastic surgery. He is extremely gentle, thorough, cautions, careful, and meticulous. His kind, friendly nature is really an added bonus to an already amazing physician.
I am 38-years old and have been diagnosed with breast cancer twice in the last 14… months. After learning of my recent recurrence and receiving the recommendation of a bilateral mastectomy, my general surgeon referred me to Dr. Kanter to discuss reconstruction options. From our initial consultation and throughout my course of treatment, I have been consistently impressed with the degree to which Dr. Kanter has recognized and acknowledged both, the physical and psychological impacts involved in my personal journey. During this process, he has ensured that I am comfortable, not only with the physical changes that I am experiencing, but also with the emotional difficulties generally shared by women undergoing something of this magnitude...a loss femininity, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Dr. Kanter often asks how I am “feeling,” focusing on me as a “whole person” as opposed to only addressing the surgical aspect of my recovery.
Dr. Kanter has been extremely patient with me throughout this adjustment, spending a great deal of time answering all of my questions (and trust me, I had a lot of them) to ease my anxiety/concerns. He included me in the development my treatment plan and continues to welcome my feedback regarding any changes made along the way. Each visit, I feel safe and cared for by Dr. Kanter as well as his office staff, and I never feel rushed...
Just one example: Our first appointment was close to 2 hours long. I’m pretty sure the actual duration of our visit was not supposed to be anywhere near that amount of time. But that’s just how Dr. Kanter is. He always seems to make his patients feel respected and important. I know for me, he has this way of making me feel as if I am his only patient, and that means a lot.
During our initial consult, Dr. Kanter provided me with his cell phone number, and he has answered EVERY SINGLE call, no matter the time of day. I have called Dr. Kanter as early as 6:00 in the morning, as late as 10:00 at night, and anytime in between. Not only does he answer, but again, he never rushes. One of our calls actually lasted 38 minutes (I know because my cell phone tracks call logs).
Dr. Kanter has also called me after hours MANY times throughout my surgical & recovery process, generally just to check in and see how I am doing. He even called AND visited the hospital every single day post-surgery. During these visits, Dr. Kanter didn’t just stop in for a few minutes. He actually spent time talking with me and changed my surgical dressing (which is something that nurses usually do). Before leaving, Dr. Kanter met with the nursing staff to provide consultation and care instructions. After I was discharged, there were two instances when Dr. Kanter saw me on Sundays, which is not a day he is scheduled to meet with patients. One of these visits was in his office, the other in the ER. Dr. Kanter’s flexibility in offering, actually urging, these unplanned “appointments” was extremely valuable. They allowed for continuity of care...ensuring that he was the treating provider, as opposed to having me seen by another physician who would have been unfamiliar with my care and possibly made recommendations inconsistent with what he found to be medically necessary. Under these circumstances, many other doctors would have taken the chance and instructed me to call an advice nurse or go to an urgent care facility/ER, and follow-up with them later that week. Dr. Kanter could have done the same and simply waited to see me at our next scheduled appointment...especially since our appointment was only one day later. But that’s just not the way he practices! I find it to be remarkable that Dr. Kanter is so proactive in moments of urgency, placing patient needs as the priority, even if that interferes with his family and personal schedule. When he says “Call me anytime,” he really means it!
These are just a few of the many ways in which Dr. Kanter goes above and beyond. I could go on and on about this, but, again, nothing I say can fully capture Dr. Kanter’s uniqueness within the medical field.
I’m sure it goes without saying that I strongly recommend Dr. Kanter to any and everyone! I am so grateful to have him as my surgeon as well as a support throughout my journey with breast cancer. Definitely a 5-Star Rating!
