Dr. William Scherer Miles, MD

Dr. Miles is a skilled surgeon with a calm and gentle bedside manner. He took time to explain the procedure including what I could expect afterwards. He involved me in my care throughout the process. Dr. Miles is truly a personable, caring, and conscientious surgeon. He is a rare find and I can recommend him without reservation.

While my Dad was in the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit at Carolina's Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Miles was the physician for the majority of the time we were there. He helped care for the ICU patients while they were recovering from surgery, etc. My Dad did not make it through his ordeal. He fought hard, but in the end, he went Home to be with the Lord. MY mother and I don't understand why this happened. We may never know. Dr. Miles let us know that the decisions we would have to make would be difficult, but he was there with us while we made those decisions, and provided comfort after the decisions were made. This was a hard 3 days at the hospital, and Dr. Miles was so very kind to us during that time. He took the time to talk to us, to tell us what good things were happening, as well as what bad things were happening. He made sure to break everything down into terms we could understand. He was honest. He was straightforward. He told the truth and he was as… straightforward as he could be, not sugarcoating anything. In the end, he sat with us and told us that he didn't think there was anything that would be able to help my Dad. He was honest, and spoke from his heart. He stated that there were other surgical measures that could be taken, but he was honest with us when he stated that he didn't feel they would be successful as the risks were greater than the benefits. He talked to us like he was a friend, and he was there when my Dad died. He comforted my mother by explaining to her that he would not have had a good quality of life if he were to have pulled through, and also let us know that he understood how hard the decision-making was. He took time to speak with my mother and answer all of her questions. If he didn't know the answer, he was honest and let us know that he didn't know the answer. He is a kind man, and he will be totally honest with you, and he will even give you his medical and personal opinions regardless of whether they agree with the surgeons' opinions. He didn't act like he was better than we were. He didn't act like he knew it all. He acted like a kind, humble, caring man, and we couldn't have asked for a better doctor. He did all he could for Dad.
