First time sedated, first surgery, and my experience was GREAT. The other reviews here are not even remotely similar to my experience.
Referred by primary dentist for 2 complex impacted wisdom tooth removals.
I was called prior to my surgery to clarify my insurance coverage, my expected out-of-pocket expense, and my finance options for said out-of-pocket expense. I had already used up most of my dental insurance for the year, and being between two jobs at the time, had just lost my health insurance. They made me fully aware of this. My actual out-of-pocket expense was within $100 of my projection, and I used the CareCredit card to pay this. They explained how it works, and billing was flawless.I got approval for CareCredit on the Thursday, and my surgery was bought and paid for on the Friday. I have 6 months to pay it off at 0% interest; which is better than my existing credit cards.
I was highly nervous before my procedure, and on my confirmation call a few days before my… appointment, I made that clear to the woman who called. She explained that while they cannot offer an oral sedation before surgery (e.g. Valium/Diazepam), to speak to my PCP. I called my PCP and received Diazepam to help me with anxiousness the next day.
Took my Diazepam 1 hour before surgery as prescribed, and felt at ease. The office is clean, well-decorated and comfortable. Reception staff are more than happy to answer questions and quell anxiety. Filled in the basic health questionnaire, gave copies of my insurance and ID, and had panoramic x-ray before surgery which was very simple. Dental nurse escorted me back to the waiting room, and about 5 mins after I was called for surgery, where I first met with Dr. Schiro.
Dr Schiro was my surgeon, and came highly recommended from my primary dentist who I trust with my life; I expected Schiro to be the same, and he was. His bedside manner is professional, honest, matter-of-fact and to the point. He made me fully aware of why my teeth had to be removed, how difficult my surgery would be (9/10), and what to expect for surgery. I was first given Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas), and shortly after, Dr Schiro did the IV himself. Within minutes, I was out and don't remember anything from my procedure.
After procedure, I was escorted by a Dental Nurse to the recovery room where I met with my husband. Husband was given directions of what I would need to do over the coming days (I was in the room, but due to sedation don't remember the directions), Dr Schiro checked on me before I left, and off we went to grab my prescriptions. The evening of my procedure, Dr Schiro personally called my husband to make sure everything was alright - and it was. I slept like a baby! The next day I had 0 pain, and minimal swelling.
Prescriptions consisted of anti-nausea medicine, an antibiotic, and pain med (norco). Took the meds religiously for the first few days but then noticed Norco was making me in pain, rather than relieving it, so I stopped taking it.
Just had my follow-up to have sutures out, but they had already fallen out on their own.
In conclusion:
Excellent surgeon - NO PAIN!, minimal swelling, no nasty side effects, very comfortable procedure and would do again 100%.
Informative, comforting support staff. Answered all my questions and were very helpful.
