At what age does a stent procedure become too high risk to be an option? At 88, my mother was scheduled for a stent procedure by this doctor. She was very high risk, taking coumadin, prior heart attack, triple bypass, with a low ejection fraction. She was a stroke waiting to happen. So what did he do? Took her off coumadin for 3 days prior to a stent procedure. Afterward, the doctor who did the procedure told me she was combative. No, she wasn't combative, she was having a stroke. Did this doctor recognize a stroke happening? No, the ward nurse figured it out after she got out of recovery. Where was the procedure done? At Baptist Downtown that had no stroke center and limited ability to treat a stroke. Now they have a stroke center that opened to great fanfare a few months ago but not then. So my poor mother was loaded into an ambulance and hustled off to Mayo. With he damage was done, they couldn't get rid of her fast enough. It was too late for the injection given right after a… stroke happens. Instead of living out her remaining months reading or playing bridge, my mother lives in a nursing home at great expense to the family and the taxpayers. No long term or short term memory. Can't tell the hot from the cold faucet, feeds herself with her left hand. Do you think the risks were properly explained to my mother?
