Dr. Yaochung Weng, MD, PhD

Yaochung Weng, MD, PhD is committed to providing comprehensive radiation oncology treatment to his patients. He takes an individualized approach to each patient and strives to strategically treat the cancer in the context of the entire patient. Dr. Weng works closely with a team of medical oncologists, surgeons, nurses, dieticians, patient navigators, and other staff to ensure that the treatments received by his patients are both personalized and up-to-date. He is trained in Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), Cyberknife, 3DCRT, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT), Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), Low Dose Rate (LDR) and High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy, and SpaceOAR Hydrogel placement. He is interested in a broad range of disease sites within radiation oncology. He also treats certain types of thyroid cancer after surgery using radioactive iodine therapy

Dr. Weng grew up in Plano, TX. …Following graduation from Plano West Senior High School, he attended Cornell University and received a Bachelor of Science in electrical and computer engineering. He then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where he earned a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While working on his thesis research, which involved building instruments to detect the growth of single cancer cells, Dr. Weng came to the realization that he wanted to make a positive impact on the lives of cancer patients by leveraging his deep understanding and appreciation of technology to treat this complex disease. With multiple generations of his family living in the DFW area, it was an easy decision for him to return to Dallas. He earned his MD and completed his training as a chief resident in radiation oncology at the UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Dr. Weng has authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals on the measurement and treatment of cancer at the single-cell level. He is also interested in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals on the use of AI in radiation oncology. Dr. Weng is an engineer at heart, he is listed as a co-inventor on several US patents. And he continues to seek out innovative, high-tech solutions to difficult problems in medicine.

Dr. Weng is married with three children. He and his wife love to travel, eat different world cuisines, and take their kids out to fun places. He enjoys DIY projects at home, and he is the designated house handyman, IT guy, plumber, electrician, mechanic, and appliance repairman. He is also fluent in Mandarin Chinese and Hokkien.
