Dr. Zongfu Fu Chen, MD

With all the reviews being either one star or five, you have to wonder what he's prescribing himself that makes him cheerful to one patient and then hateful to the next 50. Believe the one-star reviews. When you need painkillers, that's what you need, and long-term alternatives like physical therapy and acupuncture take considerable time, effort and money to potentially relieve pain, and they certainly DO NOT replace the benefits of pain-relieving medication. You deserve a doctor who prescribes for YOU, not for his theories.

Dr.Chen is excellent. He is very personable, respectful and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend him.

I have never had a worse visit with a physician. He talked over me. He would not listen at all. He did not behave in a professional manner. He mentioned that his care was great because he gave me 20 minutes of his time. His staff had scheduled me and told me whether it was a virtual visit or not but he was angry that I saw him virtual. He was rude. I had a panic attack after this visit because of how he treated me. I reported him to UPMC and they have not gotten back to me and its been a week. He wished me luck finding another doctor because "he will make sure that I do not". He could care less about his patients.

I've written reviews on UPMC site but they limit or refuse to post all of their negative feedback and I'm absolutely sure of this. My 10+ year family doc has a 3.6 rating but UPMC's rating of him is 4.8 stars, He's just NOT that good and my review never made it to their site. Apparently, Dr. Chen couldn't make it as an anesthesiologist so they put him here. After an appointment you get harassed with fixed question, unsolicited emails that only show half the story, you can not unsubscribe nor can you answer completely. Yes I could call and ask them to remove it but its up to them to type in a reason for the phone call and I do NOT trust UPMC's distorted documentation practices. The questions are purposely slanted to their advantage giving a greatly distorted overall view. Dr. Chen either doesn't understand his patients or he's so egotistic he can not be open minded. After reading his notes long after my appointment, I see he incorrectly stated distorted facts creating an inaccurate,… unfair and misleading view of the appointment. Normally, you will never see his notes. To sum up his diagnostic talents, I'd have to ask what do you call a doctor who received all "C's" in med-school? Answer.. Doctor... I know, pain management doc's are hard to come by but if you can at all, find someone else, anyone else. Maybe your puppies veterinarian? Read the reviews from UPMC employees, UPMC as a whole, cares about the numbers, not necessarily about their patients. My votes for Allegheny Health Network. If your not quite a doc, UPMC pain management's the place for you.

He faced his computer screen the whole time I was speaking. He continually interrupted me mid sentence. I know he wasn’t listening when he was going to order a back x-ray after I just told him I had a recent ct scan. Then he said he would order 2 pain pills a day. I was already on that when I came to him so I knew he wasn’t paying any attention to me at all. I feel it was a wasted visit.

The worst Doctor I have ever been to. Extremely condescending and would not listen to me. He even laughed when he left the room due to me breaking down and crying. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy.

A top notch physician who takes great care of his patients. Easily the best practice I have visited.

Dr Chen and the nurses are all very nice and caring. He always listens and tries to get to the heart of the problem. The receptionists could be a little nicer to the patients and when a patient calls into the office.

I rarely write reviews but after my visit with Dr. Chen, I felt it was important to ensure others don't waste their time or money in visiting with him. First of all, I had the first appointment of the day and he was about 15 minutes late. I figured it was fine considering the traffic and weather in Pittsburgh that morning. When he finally came in to the room, he acted like he didn't care to hear why I was there to see him. I was explaining a very serious health issue that I have been dealing with for the past 3 years and it just seemed to go in one ear and out the other. I told him that I had been on and off pain medicine for the past year, as prescribed by my doctor in another state. Having just moved to Pittsburgh I was looking for a pain management doctor to help me with the breakthrough pain (possibly pain medicine) AND figure out a long term solution to my back and neck pain. Mind you, all of this took place in less than 5 minutes as that was all he gave me. After talking… to him, he said he would give me pain medicine, a muscle relaxer and some other type of medication. He didn't even explain what the other medication did or if and how I should take them all together. While he was typing in my prescriptions and mumbling about how pain meds are not good long term, I noticed an acupuncture "doll" on the desk. I had a positive experience with acupuncture in the past and was wondering if he practiced it. I asked him and he said that he did in fact and that it was a good option for those in pain. I said I would agree and wondered if it would be a good option for me. He never responded. He just kept typing up my prescriptions and then walked out of the room. I heard him tell the nurse in the hall that he was going to give me the meds and that was basically it. No need for a follow up. After 5 mins with this doctor, who I could barely understand, I left out of there with no plan to figure out the source of my pain and no treatment options. If I were a pill seeker, this would had been a major score. But as I am not a pill seeker, and truly need to find some type of long term relief, this was a total waste of time and money. Sorry for the long review, but I'm hoping others steer clear if you are truly looking for a compassionate doctor that wants to understand your pain and help resolve it.

I have had several injections in my neck for chronic pain. This is due to a broken neck from many years ago. The first time I had 3 injections in different area's of the neck. This helped with the pain for approximately 5 weeks. Today I went for a trail injections. It was so painful I could not stay still which is required for this injection. Doing the trial injection numbing medication is not allowed. It was so painful I was in tears. Dr. Chen stopped the procedure, did a steroid injection instead. However, he was very insulting to me. He kept saying other patients can stay still, I don't understand why you can't. My patients never have so much trouble. I was in tears and explained that it was much too painful for me lay motionless while a needle is being pushed between my vertebrae with no medication. He said I was over reacting. For a Dr. who treats people with chronic pain issues, seems strange he has no concern of causing someone so much pain. I do want to mention… that his resident had more compassion in his pinkie then Dr. Chen has in his whole body. And I would like to thank him for that. Please think twice before you have Dr. Chen do any type of injection.
