External radiation of high-energy X-rays are aimed at tumors to shrink them and kill cancer (malignant) cells. Therapy is often combined with chemotherapy or surgery.

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)- protocol of several treatments of high dose radiation at the tumor (typically those that have spread to the brain) It is also known as:

  • Cyberknife
  • Gamma knife radiosurgery
  • Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)
  • Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR)

  • Shrinks tumors that obstruct your airway, making breathing easier
  • Decreases the size of tumors to improve swallowing
  • Gives pain relief to those with cancer involving bones and spine

Side effects:

  • Fatigue and Malaise
  • Redness or hardening of the skin (radiation burns)
  • Difficulty swallowing
