What is HCAHPS?

The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Survey, is a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology that has been in use since 2006 to measure patients' perspectives of hospital care. The HCAHPS survey is administered to a random sample of adult patients across medical conditions between 48 hours and 6 weeks after discharge; the survey isn't restricted to Medicare beneficiaries. You can learn more here.

*CMS has created the HCAHPS Star Ratings in order to enable consumers to more quickly and easily assess the patient experience of care information that is provided on the Hospital Compare Web site. Star ratings also allow consumers to more easily compare hospitals.

** HCAHPS data is broken down into the following buckets; definitely recommend, probably recommend, probably not recommend, definitely not recommend.

Awful

Howard. If you need help, I hope and pray he isn’t the nurse to receive you. Howard, you know who I am and you know how you treated me and I will take this post down the second you apologize. But until then I will tell my story. I experienced my first panic attack recently… I was completely unaware, I admit, as to what a panic attack is. I thought I was dying, (see symptoms of someone experiencing a panic attack for first time from your own hospital’s documentation) and this smug, belligerent, male, nurse treated me like I was the scum of the earth. He wouldn’t help me to a wheelchair when I was paralyzed. He wouldn’t even approach me. He sarcastically asked me why I was crying (while I, a grown man, wept heavily). I do apologize that I cursed at you Howard, but I felt it was the only thing I could do to get anyone’s attention. He made my panic attack escalate far further than it ever would have if I was treated with some empathy. An animal at the vet would be treated better. Shame on you. I truly hope you are a good person who treats your family and loved ones with respect because that is all that anyone wants. Help is all that I wanted when I arrived at the ER while I was thinking I was leaving my wife and kids behind. In the absolute worst moment of my life, this ER treated me like a drug addict that keeps showing up causing them problems I am a man, with a wife with two kids who was terrified of leaving behind. Be human, and please be kind Howard and the rest of the staff at Northern Dutchess

Outrageously insulted

Want to be insulted, ridiculed, demeaned and walk out feeling like there's something wrong with you and you belong in a psychiatric hospital? Try the Surgical department. I handed a CD of an ultrasound to the receptionist in this dept. She (rudely) told me the Dr. could not "see it" but I had visited before and thought he might be able to view the CD, and no harm in giving it to him. Right? During consultation with Dr. (who is amazing and forget it I can never go back there), he handed me the CD. There was a large yellow sticky note on it and, written in block letters in pencil, was: "NUTSO WANTS YOU TO SEE THIS". Yes, that's right. Dr. forced this person to apologize, not enough. I want her fired. Only phone call I got from anyone in supervisory position (although I was promised followup) said she was being "disciplined". NOT GOOD ENOUGH. I have PTSD from a tragic personal loss. I need to go back into therapy now because of what this IDIOT did to me. WHAT DO YOU THINK, WANT TO GO INTO THAT HOSPITAL NOW?
