What is HCAHPS?
The HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) Survey, is a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology that has been in use since 2006 to measure patients' perspectives of hospital care. The HCAHPS survey is administered to a random sample of adult patients across medical conditions between 48 hours and 6 weeks after discharge; the survey isn't restricted to Medicare beneficiaries. You can learn more here.
*CMS has created the HCAHPS Star Ratings in order to enable consumers to more quickly and easily assess the patient experience of care information that is provided on the Hospital Compare Web site. Star ratings also allow consumers to more easily compare hospitals.
** HCAHPS data is broken down into the following buckets; definitely recommend, probably recommend, probably not recommend, definitely not recommend.

The ER is terrible, other hospital services okay
Self-verified patient of Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital - Posted on February 20th, 2019
My two emergency room visits left much to be desired. My first, I arrived with chest pains and known multiple health issues that would make that particularly scary. The doctor immediately decided it was anxiety, even as my bloodwork indicated something being very wrong. I was placed on one-to-one, like suicide watch, despite being no threat to myself. I mentioned my health issues, and she refused to explore whether they could be the cause. Next thing I know, someone from community mental health is in my room to interview me. I was sent home with no relief and a referral for therapy. My doctors, when I followed up, were horrified. I was told by more than one practice that if I think I can survive the drive, to go the hour north or south to a different hospital in an emergency. Well, two months later I am bleeding uncontrollably and my doctor orders me to the ER ASAP. Great. I get in right away and was treated terribly by my nurse. I could tell she was not listening while I spoke. Eye-rolling and tutting and all. While I sat there. Bleeding. After imaging and bloodwork showed that yes, I am bleeding and yes, my iron levels were real low now, the same nurse came in to tell me I was on my period "what did I expect?" (I was not, we discussed this, it's why I was there..), that her bloodwork is worse than mine so be grateful. I left, still bleeding out, with no instructions for follow-up care, but instructions from the doctor to come back if it continues. I said "It continues now, do I just turn around?" And the nurse said, "we still won't help you". So yeah, not going back if I can ever help it. I don't recommend it at all. Munsing and Mercy aren't that far, if you can make it. For imaging and other services, they are just fine. I haven't had any bad service outside of the emergency room.
