Abusive, neglectful, and a violation of basic human rights; this hospital is an abomination in every sense of the word

Coming here was the absolute WORST, most dehumanizing experience of my entire life. I am simply beside myself with how myself and other patients were treated here. My parents wanted me to go to the ER for a psychiatric evaluation and I came thinking that I would be evaluated in a humane way and then discharged; as I knew there was nothing seriously wrong with me and my parents had taken a comment I had made about my mental health too seriously. I went simply to ease their minds but had no idea that while I was going into treatment without wanting to commit suicide, I'd leave with more suicidal ideation than I have ever had in my life. I am 20 years old, meaning that I am a consenting adult and should have been informed in detail about what was going to be done to me against my will. Upon calling me in, I was asked a few routine questions and then told to go into another room. NOBODY at this hospital informed me that after I walked through that door, I would lose all of my basic rights WITHOUT my knowledge or consent. Once the door shut, I was told repeatedly that I was not allowed to leave or revoke my "consent" which I found absolutely sickening considering the fact that I never once gave my consent to lose all of my basic rights as a human being. I was forced to strip in front of a nurse, give up all of my clothes and belongings even though while this was happening, I was saying over and over that nobody had informed me about any of this and to please let me speak to my parents. The nurse did not care at all and simply stared at me coldly as I had a severe panic attack in the bathroom right in front of her. After that, I was put into a room with a padded door. At certain points, I asked for tissues (which were never given to me) and a blanket (which was given to me with a sigh and an eye roll). There were patients screaming, crying, and apparently, two of them even tried to commit suicide while I was in there (not at all surprising given the way that patients in this hospital are treated more like animals and less like human beings), which was extremely traumatizing for me. Everything I said was completely disregarded by most of the staff (with the exception of a few nicer employees) and numerous times, I saw the staff yelling at more than one of the patients who were begging to be let out because they were never informed that they were going to be locked into the psychiatric wing of the hospital for UPWARDS of 10 hours just waiting to be evaluated. Not only this, but I SPECIFICALLY asked and made it clear that I did not want to see my parents and that I would NOT consent to them visiting me. However, they were let in by a nurse (directly violating my wishes and rights) which caused me to have yet another panic attack that was completely ignored and disregarded. I can say with absolute conviction that being placed into this facility has not only scarred me even further psychologically but has affected me so deeply that I am afraid to seek help from any and all mental health workers moving forward. The day after being held there (I was discharged because I was not at all a danger to myself or others. Just anxious and depressed.), I cancelled all of my scheduled appointments with my psychiatrist and therapist because I truly do not know who I can and cannot trust anymore in the mental health field. If I ever were to become suicidal, I would never reach out for help ever again for fear that these employees who are supposed to help patients would further dehumanize me & damage my psyche. I have a strong educational background in psychology and am reasonably well versed in law surrounding the field, so when I asked multiple employees to explain to me why and how this was all being done without my knowledge or express consent, nobody would answer me. I would not wish this treatment upon my worst enemy. I had no idea emotional abuse and neglect of psychiatric patients was still actively occurring in the US; especially not so close to home. This quite possibly the single most deplorable & inhumane facility in the country and I do plan on filing a report about this horrendous experience to both the American Psychiatric Association; as a place for those who are mentally ill should not add more trauma on top of patients' preexisting struggles with mental health.
