My son received treatment for malignant melanoma which was identified as a particularly aggressive type at the first biopsy. Unfortunately, his initial oncology appointment was scheduled several weeks after the first biopsy. The complete excision was a few weeks later. Then treatment was started weeks after that. The clinicians seemed to have no sense of urgency in scheduling his care. Appointments were frequently delayed. His doctor appointments were sometimes rescheduled. His diagnostic tests were delayed due to their office errors (pre-authorizations not sent to insurance co.). Reaching the office by phone was so difficult that we actually went in person just to handle communication because calls were not returned. Each of these events may have cost a few days to a couple weeks of delay. My son died about 16 months after diagnosis. He was 25 years old. I feel like an utter fool looking back on the whole thing. We trusted the doctors to provide care in his best interest. I think they… wrote him off from the start. If you have melanoma, I highly recommend seeking treatment elsewhere, even if you have to travel out of the state.
