My Father is in his 70s and has severe rheumatoid arthritis. Yesterday he visited Greensboro Medical Associates and called to request that a staff member bring him a wheelchair or assist him into the building for his safety. He was told that they would not help him into the building multiple times or bring him a wheelchair multiple times, and would only assist him inside the building. Upon speaking to an administrator with GMA today it was explained to me that the will always refuse to assist patients into or out of their building because they want to keep any and all liability on the owners of the building that they rent, that they do not see this practice as negligent or improper and are not concerned for their patients safety outside of their business. Moreover, she went on to reflect that it is the intention of the practice to only provide the absolute minimum requirements of the ADA and that concessions will never be made for individual patients. While probably still acting at the… edge of what a court would consider "legal" this is probably not a place that would be the best choice for your family member, especially if they are elderly, disabled or have any issues that require care and compassion. Organizational culture is extremely important in choosing a medical group and this organization has made clear that risk mitigation and minimizing liability is more important to them than patient safety. This same thought process is likely to govern their medical decisions and standard of care. There are better options.
