Rafi Boghossian was great - always patiently answering my questions. Dr Kwon explained my issue in detail. Spent a lot of time answering my concerns/questions. Rafi & Dr. Kwon are top notch!
I'm writing to share my exceptional experience at UCLA Hospital (Ronald Reagan) on February 3rd, 2026, where I underwent aortic heart valve replacement surgery. I was incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Murray H. Kwon, Cardiac Surgery at UCLA's Cardiovascular Center, lead my care. Dr. Kwon is not only an outstanding surgeon but also a genuinely kind person who visited me daily during my recovery. His expertise and compassion made a difficult experience much more manageable. I'd also like to extend my gratitude to Dr. Olcay Aksoy, Interventional Cardiology, for their frequent visits and care. The entire hospital staff were top-notch – courteous, helpful, and truly exceptional. Last but not least, I want to express my gratitude to Mr. Rafi Boghossian from the UCLA Division of Cardiac Surgery office. He played a key role in making this happen, providing clear communication and diligent follow-up throughout my pre-op and post-op care. I couldn't have asked for a better surgeon or… hospital. Thank you to Dr. Kwon and the entire UCLA team. Luis Felipe Seldner (79 years)
Read MoreI am 47 and recently had open heart surgery (valve sparing aortic root replacement) and cannot say enough great things about Dr. Kwon, Rafi (surgery coordinator and just a great guy) and everyone in Dr. Kwon’s office. In preparing for surgery, Dr. Kwon (and Rafi) were amazing and happy to answer any and all questions I had. They were open and communicative about what to expect and provided me with a sense of calm going into surgery. Surgery was moderately complex, and I felt like I was in the best hands with Dr. Kwon. After surgery, he checked in on me often in ICU as well as in my stepped down unit and his bed side manner is warm and comforting. I felt like I was a patient that Dr. Kwon and his team truly cared about me. The support, follow-ups and overall care I received was excellent and I feel blessed to have been in such good hands. I highly recommend Dr. Kwon, he’s excellent all around.
I will start by saying how HAPPY AND GRATEFUL our family is to Dr Kwon he perform open heart surgery to my husband, He got a full tune up like the Dr said ;-) we say he got a motor overhaul. Since the first time we saw Dr Kwon he gave us much confidence, The funny but simple way of explaining all the issues my husband had and how he was going to work on fixing it. We really loved the 405 freeway example and now he has the Ferrari (repair heart) after the amazing surgery now just waiting to fully recover. It's been a blessing since we got referred to UCLA starting with Rafi Boghossian contacting us, He has been very helpful all around very professional and caring since the first call to start the process until now after the surgery. A huge THANK YOU to All the wonderful people that took care of my husband before and after the surgery. What a wonderful experience we had with Dr Kwon and his whole team. Many blessings to all, With INFINITE GRATITUD. The Rodriguez Flores Family
I had a great experience with Dr. Kwon and Rafi Boghossian, I highly recommend to anyone that is in need of heart surgery.
Dr. Murray is an exceptional open heart surgeon. His calm demeanor and thorough knowledge were at expert level. He gave the circulatory system of allegory of the LA Freeway system with clogged traffic. It helped me to visualize what was happening inside my heart. Rafi Boghosian, his medical coordinator was thorough on all the necessary pre-ops required before surgery. He too is extremely thorough in surgery and walked me through all the necessary pre-op tests before surgery. They make a fantastic duo of saving one life at a time. My recovery experience has been exactly what Dr. Kwon told me to expect over 4-6 weeks but also very optimistic. He called the night before surgery and sat with me the day after surgery. My follow up went as planned and our discussion was sincere and meaningful to a full recovery!
I met with my GP who five minutes diagnosed me with a heart murmur who referred me to cardiologist, Dr. Hollowed the following Thursday. Dr. Hollowed ordered Chest MRI and Sonogram the following Monday. After reviewing footage he highly recommended Dr. Kwon to open heart as opposed to TAVR. I met with the TAVR people who said I was a better open heart candidate because I was young enough for my sternum to heal. Dr. Kwon was extremely clear and precise what was ailing me a calcified aortic valve, an occluded LAD and an occluded bilateral artery. He used the metaphor of LA traffic of the 405 not moving properly, the 5 way clogged along with the 101 Freeways. His bedside demeanor was the only factor keeping me calm and focused on the end results but not focus on the fear of going under the knife. His medical coordinator, Rafi Boghossian, guided me through all the pre-op tests (COVID) (vein scan) and dental work clearance (no bacteria within teeth or gums allowed )prior to the… operation and remained calm on the phone at all times never allowing fear to enter the equation. I went in with my two sons and looked up at the surgery room and I was out. I woke up later which seemed like only 5 seconds with the ICU nurse exclaiming "Mr. Glynn, Dr. Kwon said you did fantastic. He visited me the next day to share how please he was how the surgery went as a textbook case. He shared it went extremely well! My recovery was in ICU 3 days but in cardiac recovery room for 8 days with extraordinary round the clock care. One nurse who who inspected my incision said "She recognize Dr. Kwon's fine work with smaller incision with a minimum fine line total incision." My PT and OT said I was "recovering faster than usual and I was in great shape post-op." Dr. Kwon and I reviewed my recovery rate and I thanked him for his skillful hands and sharing he was going to take great care of me. I am beginning my 5th week of recovery walking around the block twice three times a day, 4 sets of exercises and up and down the stairs to use my bathroom. Everything he said which was to happen in my recovery. My follow up with him he shared "You are in the top trajectory of my healing patients". I am a Buddhist and I thanked his parents for doing such a wonderful job raising him. He attended Med School at Northwestern University in my hometown of Chicago! I knew I was in good hands and he is a top surgeon at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. *****
Read MoreDr. Kwon provided exceptional care for my valve replacement and aneurysm repair. Pre-surgery, he spent a ton of time explaining everything and answering every question. His demeanor was kind, calm and confidence inducing. On the day of surgery he again spent time making sure I was prepared and aware of what would transpire. Post surgery he came by every day to check on me and make sure my recovery was going well. My recovery went exceptionally well. I cannot recommend Dr. Kwon highly enough.
