From the beginning, I felt considerable pressure from Statcare to agree to a lobectomy from their network surgeon (Covenenant Health), even though other more reputable healthcare facilities and surgeons considered me a candidate for less radical lung-sparing surgery. Some suggested surgery might not even be necessary at all! On my second office appointment, as soon as she walked in the door, Dr Byrd asked if I had scheduled surgery (lobectomy). I simply was not ready to make that decision based on one surgical encounter. There was a palpable change in demeanor and decreased cooperation from Dr Byrd and her staff after they discovered I had sought a second opinion and consulted with surgeons outside their network. Isn’t it my business if I want to seek other opinions, particularly when there are differing opinions on the urgency (or even the necessity) for major thoracic surgery? Why should a confident and competent medical professional feel insecure or threatened if a patient seeks… additional resources to aid in clarifying whether or not to pursue a potentially life changing surgery? I have typically been very healthy and active. I went to these people for help at a time when I felt blindsided, scared, and very confused. Instead of empathy, I experienced rudeness and apathy. The communication at this practice is very poor. Not only were my calls often unanswered or met with a delayed text only response, but the practice also mismanaged my FMLA documentation - twice. I have never felt more like a number. If you have a loved one in need of pulmonary care at what can be a most difficult and confusing time, I highly suggest avoiding Statcare Pulmonary.
