Dr. Benjamin Mcvay Petre, MD

Hi, I wanted to write about my experience in order to share the possibility to those who may be miserable as I once was. It has been one year and 1 ?2 months since my surgery and I am extremely happy with my results due too my surgeon Dr. Benjamin Petre! From 3 months to 6.5 months post-surgery, I was just satisfied with results. As like you all doing your research, Dr. Petre is rated extremely high among the other few that do this surgery in the Baltimore/DC area. I know a 25-year-old lady that had it done by a Baltimore doctor and she is 70-80% better with major hip clicking, and another gentleman who is my age, 51, who is 60-70% better after having the surgery in Colorado. I have not always been, but reached 97% at 10.5 months and have maintained this impressive well-being with running (4*wk at 2miles/day). Here is why I recommend Dr. Petre and his professionalism. In a way I was a patient from He$& (you know what I mean). My Blue Cross insurance denied my surgery for… Arthroscopic labral hip repair. Of course, I appealed and eventually the health insurance provider’s Harvard Doctor and Dr. Petre were able to talk on the phone. My surgery was finally approved for coverage about two days before surgery (sooo stressful-thanks for that Blue Cross). This was about the fourth time Dr. Petre had called and finally able to reach the Insurance Doctor. Next, I arrived at Arundel Hospital in Annapolis and I initially noticed patients were being ignored. When my surgery prep time arrived, I went to the desk and the lady proceeded to tell me that the elective surgery area lost power. I had to go to the main surgical center (Thanks AAMC for not having a sign or making an announcement). It was a madhouse at the main area and of course I had an issue checking in (this seriously was not my day). An experienced person was later able to resolve the computer issue. I am sharing these glitches of how bad it really got and to impart how good Dr. Petre really is! Consequently, I get taken back into the surgical area and get an IV in my arm. I am second of four for the day when suddenly I hear the computers went down. I was given the option to go home and reschedule or wait and see if the computers would come back up. I waited because I wanted to get out of the extreme debilitating pain and was prepared to take the rest of the week off from work! The rest of the surgeries ended up being cancelled and I was sent home-hurting :-(. I went to work the next day and was called early in the morning that there was room at 7pm. My 7pm surgery time unfortunately got bumped for an emergency gall bladder. I was told I was bumped because my surgery was elective. This annoyed me as I’m sure it would all of you, not to be insensitive, but I honestly may have been in more pain and did not feel like this was elective for me (however, I wasn't going to die from my condition). Long story short, my surgery began at 10:30pm. I woke up at 12:30am and left the hospital about an hour later with my wife. It has to be a pretty darn good surgeon that would take care of his patient in the middle of the night after a full day at the office! Wouldn’t you agree? The first month is horrible! I wouldn’t recommend this, but I went back to work on crutches after 5 days. My work place has automatic handicap electronic opening doors and I was able to do computer work at my desk. Do this at home if you can! I was on a cane in 3.5 weeks only because I hated crutches. I did the Physical Therapy but hated it. I felt like it kept setting me back. I kept thinking to myself that I needed to heal, but now that I look back, I don’t have any scar tissue issues or limited range of motion. I was about 70% at 3 months and tried running on a tread mill (I read other marathoners with hip labral repairs were running 10 miles at 3 and 4 months). So dumb-me!!! at 50 years of age tried running on a treadmill. Well I quickly found out this was way to early into my recovery. Because of this-twice, at 6 months I was down from 70% to 50% better. At this point surgery was still well worth it, since prior, I couldn’t stand still for more than 1 minute and had to sit down after 3 minutes due to pain deep in the front and back of my hip joint (rear-end). Prior to surgery, I couldn’t walk through a grocery store without leaning completely on the grocery cart. Basically, I was not enjoying life since I couldn’t really walk. I really have a deep appreciation for those who cannot walk! So I finally decided to really give healing a chance. At 6 months I stopped all activity and for some reason felt like keeping my toes pointed in, pigeon toed as it were, thought it would help. At 10.5 months I just suddenly noticed one day that my hip had stopped popping/clicking. This had caused pain from continual popping. My hip discomfort was completely gone! I have since started taking a few 2 mile runs and I feel so fortunate now! I want to reiterate that I am at 97%, with minor popping once in a great while (once per wk), but pain free. Dr. Petre performed this quality surgery after a day at the office and then waiting a few hours at the hospital for an open surgical room. He definitely has good concentration, focus, and dedication! *Apparently the loss of power at AAMC was a rare event- one nurse said it did not happen at all in her 27 years. I have a work buddy whose wife works there and it has not happened since. For those of you like me where I thought I may never be able to simply walk through the grocery store without major support from the shopping cart, walk around Las Vegas while on a vacation, you must definitely check out Dr. Petre - the midnight surgeon!

Dr. Petre is the best! He and his staff are extremely professional and very responsive to the needs of their patients.

Dr. Petre, did a great job on my shoulder which was quite a mess and my recovery is progressing a 100 times quicker than the last shoulder surgery in 2002. His professionalism and step by step guidance on the procedure was everything he had explain to me and my wife. He also has a fantastic team that was always there to asist in every way they could to fulfill my needs and concerns. Thanks again

Wow! Is Dr Petre good! Excellent and thorough exam, very knowledgeable, excellent communication and explanation of what is going on, doesn't do more than needed but works to patient's level of need and comfort, very caring and compassionate, takes plenty of time to ensure that we understand everything but doesn't waste any time. Gives a very thorough workup for physical therapist. Works with a PT right across the hall that is also top-notch. We have very high level of confidence in Dr Petre and will drive the extra distance any time we need orthopedics.

Had been to several doctors previously and Dr. Petre was the only one that stepped up to the plate and helped me with my ACL injury. Only have good things to say about him and his staff. I would recommend him if you need a new ACL.

I saw Dr. Petre c/o of a complex injury sustained which after multiple surgeries I continue to have difficulties. Dr. Petre was professional and attentive to my questions/concerns. With the help of God, I will make the appropriate choice of my future ortho care.

I am extremely happy with my choice of Dr. Petre to deal with my hip injury. He has a great bedside manner; his explanations are clear and easily understood ; he presents all options and tracks my progress. I have had 2 hip injections and physical therapy and am definitely on the mend. Although he is relatively new to the practice, he is both youthfully enthusiastic and professional.

I was referred to Dr. Ben Petre by Anne Arundel Medical Center after I broke my foot, in May and then when I broke it again in August. I would definitely refer him as a doctor. He is very nice.

I saw Dr Petre for my knee problems. He is excellent. Very thorough and patient. Explained all of my options. We decided that meniscus surgery was the best course. I could not be more pleased with the outcome. My knee feels great. I would recommend Dr Petre to anyone. Thanks!
