Dr. Robert Ernst Miegel, MD

Wow. Dr Miegle know knees. My 2 TKR within 7 weeks of each other went remarkably well. I couldn't be more pleased.

Dr Miegel did a complete redo on my right knee a little more than a year & a half ago & a complete total knee replacement on my left knee two months ago. My right knee had originally been replaced over 20 years ago & gradually wore away. Dr Miegel did the second total knee replacement on my right knee. I had gone to a different doctor before I came to Dr Miegel & this other doctor had no idea what was wrong with my knee. When Dr Miegel saw the X rays he told me that I needed surgery. Why the other doctor couldn't see the problem is beyond me.

My experience with Dr. Miegel involved a left hip replacement. He is a professional with a no nonsense approach. From first appointment to exit from Mt. Auburn with a replacement joint took me a bit under a month. The hip had been diagnosed as needing replacement by his colleague Dr. Burke at MIT, so it was not a rush to judgement on his part. It was an examination followed by a "What would you like me to do about the condition?" question. When I said that it was obvious to me that it was going to need a replacement sooner or later, he concurred and I was scheduled for OR time in a couple of weeks. The procedure was correctly performed. The stay at Mt. Auburn was excellent. The results were excellent.

Perhaps his staff does not forward messages from his various offices, perhaps he cares about patients in some practices more than others? I ended up going in for emergency/urgent care not once but twice following a procedure since he did not respond to my pain concerns for more than a week. I nearly had a second MRI done out of pocket since the urgent care doctors wanted to see images and no one could reach him to have my images sent over for nearly 2 weeks. I decided to tough the pain out since the cost of a second round of MRI's is so much. Once I did see him, he never explained the results of the procedure in any detail and seemed apathetic to my concerns about managing pain between now and when I can schedule more significant surgery. I was made to feel like a hassel. When I did read the results for the procedure, they raised more questions than answers including recommending procedures that I had not considered. While I understand that I lack the expertise to properly… interpret a report, I would like it explained in at least a rudimentary form (although I would prefer detail).He did refer me to a colleague for surgery but was disinterested in talking about who my best options for surgery might be / where I should have it done. I just don't know if I can trust this referral since it appears to be to one of his colleagues in his private practice.Now, I am more confused than ever, in more pain than I was before I saw him and back at square one for finding someone to treat me.

I took my mother to see Dr. Miegel on 2/6/10 and we loved him. He was excellent in every way. He was very courteous, very patient and explained things very well to my mother. I feel good that he's going to be the one who'll do my mother's surgery. I believe she's in good hand.
