Pamela K. McClain, D.D.S.
Dr. McClain, a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, has been immersed in dentistry most of her life beginning at age 14 as a dental assistant in her father’s (Dr. Robert Schallhorn) office. She attended Colorado State University and the University of Colorado where she received her B.S. in Dental Hygiene. Subsequently, she attended dental school at the University of Colorado and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Her post-doctoral training in periodontics was completed at the University of California in San Francisco. She then entered private practice limited to periodontics and implants with her father in 1987.
While maintaining a fulltime private practice, she has also been active in periodontal research and teaching. She holds or has held appointments as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry and as a Research Professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, and has published multiple articles …from her research. Her research studies in periodontal regeneration have been acknowledged as the recipient of the first R. Earl Robinson Periodontal Regeneration Award from the American Academy of Periodontology in 1989 and subsequently in 2004 and again in 2006.
Dr. McClain has also been very active in the ongoing growth and development of periodontics and standards of care via her involvement in the American Academy of Periodontology. She has served in multiple capacities and positions over the past 20 years and has been elected by her peers for her leadership abilities to be Secretary-Treasurer of the American Academy of Periodontology in 2008, Vice President in 2009, and will continue through the chairs eventually culminating in the position of President in 2011.
Dr. McClain has also been very active in teamwork with family dentists and other dental specialties. She has lectured at multiple interdisciplinary dental meetings and conferences to enhance optimal total dental care to patients. She is the second periodontist to be elected to active membership in the prestigious American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and is the first and only female periodontist to be an active member of the organization. Furthermore, she has been honored for her leadership role by being elected a Council Member by that Academy.
While her involvement in research and organized dentistry are important, her passion remains in treating patients and improving their quality of life. Her diagnostic and clinical skills of all aspects of therapy coupled with her gentle patient management help create a warm caring environment for patients.
