Dr. Karen Anne Schurgin, PhD

Im commenting on a part of Karen Shurgins behavior as an Art Therapy professor at Wayne State University. I took two classes with the professor. I think it’s important that her clients know how she talks about her clients in the classroom. In one class Dr. Shurgin presented a number of drawings she said was from her clients. Through our the lecture Dr. Shurgin point out the vaginas she saw in the tree bark of house, tree, person assessments. These as interventions were never designed a psychosexual assessment. During the very same class the professor commented on one of her clients art pieces. Point out that the client had mania. And that it was so much fun to have mania when you are bipolar. As a veteran with ptsd who has experienced mania several times. It’s not fun. I even pointed this out in class and the professor went on to insist that mania was fun. The teacher often uses the words “nuts” and “crazy” in class to describe her own clients and others with mental health… diagnosis’s. Dr. Shurgin flat out rejects evidence based practice. Which is the standard in the mental health profession across the country. What this means is that she is experimenting her clients with untested and dated theories and mental health interventions. Often the professor would ignore the last 30 years of mental health research. Because Dr Shurgin has personal biases against science. If I was a client of Dr. Shurgin I would make it clear that your treatment should not be brought up in class at Wayne state. It’s insulting to the clients and dangerous to the future clients of all the future mental health professionals. I filed a discrimination complaint and Dr Shurgin denied everything. But she has diarrhea of the mouth in the class room. And often switches between dirty jokes about male body parts and narratives about her past and current clients. If you don’t believe me I’m sure you can ask the Art therapy department to audit a class and see how she talks about clients under her care. It’s shameful.
