Needs practice connecting with patient in a caring manner, say their name, look into their eyes, ask them questions to show that you care. Ask how are you? How can I help you? Connect to the patient on their level instead of speaking at them with a predetermined set of recommendations . Knowledge is great and important but understanding of a patient’s desires and needs is equally if not more important. Telling the family how good you are at your job is not necessary but trying to understand what a family needs and is hoping for and understanding the value they place on the patient in front of you is equally as valuable.
