Dr. Shakira Shanker is a Board Certified Neurologist with an expertise in Clinical Neurophysiology. She completed her medical internship at Montefiore Medical Center and subsequently pursued her residency in Neurology at North Shore University Hospital- Zucker School of Medicine affiliated with Hofstra University, where she served as chief neurology resident. During her training she was awarded for her excellent teaching of medical students and her peers. In addition, during her training she was invited to teach neurosciences at the prestigious Tel Aviv University- Sackler School of Medicine in Israel. Dr. Shanker completed her fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology where she was trained extensively in neurophysiology, electronics, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, single fiber EMG, motor unit analysis and disorders of the neuromuscular junction. During her training she was also educated and trained in muscular dystrophies, genetics, and myopathies. Furthermore, she was trained in epilepsy and the care of patients with epilepsy.
She serves as an active member of the American Academy of Neurology and American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Furthermore, she also served as the co-chair for the New York Pain Society.
Dr. Shanker holds certifications in botox therapy and neuromuscular ultrasound. She has an advanced approach to neuromuscular medicine utilizing ultrasound guided techniques. She has been known for her unique personalized and compassionate approach to patient care. She adjusts her management of neurological conditions based off the needs of the patient utilizing both westernized and traditional medicine. She is well versed in conversational Spanish and Gujurati.
