Dr. Alan N. Carlson, MD

Resident perfunctory and careless. Mismarked for astigmatism

Dr. Carlson is the best. My husband had a cornea transplant and lens implant and is extremely pleased with Dr. Carlson. He is thorough and to my knowledge, one of the best surgeons for this condition. My husband had no vision in his right eye and no pheripheral at all. Now he does. We are now doing follow ups but so far, everything is great. The first visit was not good at all as far as the wait time. Our appt. was around 2:00 and we didn't get seen until around 5:30. I have had some issues with a member of his staff in the insurance department and her rudeness and inability to return calls. But I have great customer service with the other staff. The first visit and the issue with the staff is the reason I did not give this review a 5 star. Dr. Carlson is like a lot of doctors, straight and to the point with not a lot of emotion but we are good with that. We will see how the follow up visits go, as we have one coming up but Dr. Carlson would be highly recommended by us. He is the best… surgeon ever.

Dr. Carlson strongly recommended that I get an Intacs inserted in my eye. I should have gotten a second opinion! It hasn't improved my vision in that eye at all. Furthermore, I have found that most centers won't use Intacs (they don't believe them either). So I subjected myself to this risk (I have other health problems) and now I have a piece of plastic in my eye? Very unsatisfied! This is what you don't want, just like with mechanics, but more important: you don't want somebody performing unnecessary procedures that expose you to risk! I feel like I was bamboozled by a slick salesman. In general my experience with DUMC physicians (and the rest) was excellent, but I guess if you get enough care you will run into somebody pushing procedures you don't need. I am disappointed. I consider myself a well-educated guy and a sophisticated consumer of health care. But Dr. Carlson suckered me.

I was refered to Dr Carlson by my family Dr. I had one eye catarac surgery and had very bad results. The other Dr could not fix the problem.My family Dr referred me to Dr Carlson and with the right meds he corrected the problem and operated on the other eye without pain or lasting problems.Thank you Dr. Carlsom

I have never been so concerned and scared about eye surgery and told my eye doctor that I needed the very best. I asked him who he would send his mother to and he said only one person, Dr. Alan Carlson at Duke and I am so thankful I followed his recommendation. I checked him out on-line and have to say that I cannot understand any of the negative because my sense is only positive. As a result, I am forever a fan of the Duke Eye Center and in particular, Dr. Alan Carlson!

I won't go into all the details but had surgery from another doctor and there were problems. I was looking for another opinion and 2 people from work both told me about Carlson. Traveling to Durham and going to the Duke Eye Hospital is not exactly the best but seeing Carlson and now that my eye is fixed, it was worth it. My wait in waiting room was not too bad and I learned that I was not the only person seeing Carlson for this type of problem. I think he sees a lot of problems from other doctors. They could use some new magazines in their waiting room.

My doctor in Raleigh told me I needed cataract surgery. He indicated it was not routine so he gave me 4 names. I asked him which one he would use if it were HIS eyes having surgery. He crossed off the other 3 and said Carlson at Duke. Surgery was successful. So far so good.

I am a price conscious shopper and thiswas a factor in my pursuit of LASIK.Unfortunately this was a big mistake. Iwill spare you the details but my treating physician in Raleigh as well as other physicians recognized that I neededthe expertise of Dr. Alan N. Carlson toremedy my situation. Wishing now that Igone to him in the first place,after 2 years of multiple visits and procedures,He was able to correct the original surgeon's errors and I am now where I wanted to be at the onset.I wish I had gone to Dr. Carlson at the onset. I am a big FAN of Dr. C and the Duke Eye Centergiven all that they have done to fix my eyesight.

Dr. Carlson is wonderful. he did surgery on both my eyes and I see 20/20 for the first time in my life. He inspired confidence.
