Armine K Smith, MD

Armine K. Smith, MD, is an Associate Professor of Urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Director of Urologic Oncology in the National Capital Region. She is a member of the Greenberg Bladder Cancer Institute, Co-Director of the Women's Bladder Cancer Program at Sibley Memorial Hospital, a Mary and Armeane Choksi Scholar, and Regional Fellowship Director for the National Cancer Institute urologic oncology fellowship rotation at Johns Hopkins National Capital Region. 

Dr. Smith specializes in the surgical and multidisciplinary management of urologic cancers, with a particular focus on bladder cancer, upper tract urothelial carcinoma, kidney cancer, and complex urinary reconstruction. Her clinical expertise includes open, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery; bladder preservation; organ and nerve-preserving cystectomy; continent urinary diversion, including orthotopic neobladder and Indiana pouch reconstruction; and nephron-sparing surgery for kidney …cancer. 

She earned her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, completed urology residency at the Cleveland Clinic, and completed fellowship training in urologic oncology at the National Cancer Institute, where her work focused on personalized and targeted therapies for bladder cancer. 

Dr. Smith's research focuses on improving outcomes and quality of life for patients with bladder cancer. Her work encompasses gender-based differences in bladder cancer presentation, treatment, and outcomes; reproductive organ preservation in women; prostate-preserving cystectomy in men; survivorship; the role of the microbiome in bladder cancer biology and treatment response; microbiome-based therapeutic strategies; and predictors of response to intravesical and systemic therapies. She has published and presented widely on urothelial cancer, kidney cancer, surgical innovation, and patient-centered outcomes. 

She is a member of the Society of Urologic Oncology, the American Urological Association, the American Association for Cancer Research, and the International Bladder Cancer Network, and has been recognized among the top urologists in Washington, DC, and Virginia.
