Dr. Mary Cathleen Mccoy, MD

I had the weirdest experience with this doctor. This is not my first pregnancy. I’ve been through this before I’ve had twins, so it’s not like I’m unseasoned here. However, I am from Utah and doctors in Utah are very kind and compassionate and empathetic and I guess that’s just what I’m used to. I had a follow up visit to do an echocardiogram on my baby and have my cervix checked. After my scan, this doctor came in and let me know that the baby looked great and my cervix looked great basically everything was good. At this appointment I am 23 weeks pregnant. She informs me that my baby is too big my baby is weighing in at 1 lbs. 9 oz. they are estimating at this point, she then proceeds to ask me what I’m eating as I was snacking on a Cliff bar. Keep in mind I am 5 foot nine. I am not an overweight woman I’m average I don’t have a history with high blood pressure or preeclampsia or gestational diabetes anything like that OK and this woman knows that because she has my history. She then… asked me how much weight I’ve gained so far and I informed her that I had gained about 15 pounds she then wide-eyed tells me wow that is way way too much. She then points at my Cliff bar again and tells me that that is essentially eating a chocolate chip cookie and that if I continue to eat processed packaged foods like that I will continue to gain weight and that my baby will be too big. This woman made so many assumptions and drew so many of her own conclusions that it was absolutely appalling. I have never ever been treated like that by a medical provider in my life and I just don’t think it’s right for someone that has no basis of where they are coming from here to attack a patient like that. I came there for an echocardiogram for my baby and a cervix check, but instead left, feeling horrible about myself and like I had done something wrong by eating a Cliff bar.

Dr. Mc Coy has some rough reviews. I think the reason is that she is very candid and straight to the point. We were taken aback by that at first, even though the many people who recommended her told us that about her. She's not going to sugar-coat anything, and in the end, you will appreciate that. If there are any potential issues, she will tell you about them and explain the worst case scenario so you can prepare yourself should that come to be. If you have other health issues (through lifestyle choices or just natural), she'll tell you what you need to do to have a successful baby. We were a very high risk pregnancy due to 3 factors (history of miscarraige, upper age limit for motherhood, and kidney issue). Some of the initial visits were gut wrenching, but again, in the end, we appreciate her frankness. She did let up in the 3rd trimester :). If you wan't an OB/GYN who's gonna sugar coat everything and be all smiles and happy for you, she's probably not for you. If… you want an incredibly talented and skilled OB/GYN, who will be very direct in her prognosis of your pregnancy, she's your choice!!

Really enjoyed our trip to see Dr. McCoy! Our ultrasound tech was fantastic!! She explained everything and was just as excited as we are! Thank you all so much!

I enjoyed having Dr. McCoy as my physician. I found her to be very knowledgeable, and her staff very personable. Would highly recommend her to anyone in need.

Great Doctor!

My last appointment was fine until I read what she sent my primary dr. She told them that she told me about certain things and she didn't. Basically she lied on her whole report to them. Says she was in the room with us for 10 minutes nope try 3 minutes. Staff is very nice tho.

I was referred to Dr. McCoy around week 12 of my pregnancy and continued visiting her office every 2-3 weeks until I delivered. I had many insulin allergies and hard-to-manage gestational diabetes. Dr. McCoy has a very strong personality which I was admittedly intimidated by at first. She deals with lots of different high risk pregnancies and I'm sure that includes many soon-to-be moms that don't care about their pregnancy/baby. Because of this, I think Dr. McCoy can initially come off a little harsh or strong. After Dr. McCoy and I got to know each other, our doctor/patient relationship changed for the better. She understood that I wanted the healthiest pregnancy possible and respected me, and I her. There is no sugar coating at this office, but that worked for me. I like to know facts. Yes, the wait is usually long, but I received Dr. McCoy's full attention when it was my turn. All my questions (and there were many!), were always answered. I never felt rushed by her.… I would definitely recommend Dr. McCoy to anyone. Get to know her. Care about your pregnancy. Do what she suggests. She cares but I don't think will tolerate those who don't. I don't blame her. I even stopped by to say hello and introduce her to my daughter after her birth. She came out and talked for several minutes and wished us well. I really had a positive experience with Dr. McCoy and hope you do too!
