Dr. Cristina A Dieguez, MD

I visited Dr. Mendiola for a yearly visit and found her to be judgemental and harsh. She also ran a pregnancy test on me without telling me and without it being needed. I only found out after I received the bill and had to pay for it because my insurance didn't cover it. Not only did I find her bedside manner cold and unprofessional, by ordering a test I didn't need or want, I ended up paying out of pocket for unnecessary medical tests.

Dr. Mendiola is the most thorough doctor I’ve had, but I’ve experienced many of the things posted about here in terms of her bedside manner. On the thorough end, she does view health holistically and offer advice on a variety of topics, which I like. She’s smart and really on top of my health history. My file with her is the most thorough I’ve ever had with a doctor. I have experienced that Dr. M is pushy with tests, but this comes back to her thorough nature. I always have to be super firm about what I feel I need, and we get along just fine. On the other end of the spectrum is her bedside manner. She’s blunt and clinical, and could develop more compassion and empathy. During my prenatal appointment she zeroed in on my age (34) and recited all of the risks I need to be aware of in a clinical way. Literally read them off her phone with no personal commentary or reassurance. She told me I need a different type of doctor (obgyn) but gave me no direction on how to find one. I… am perfectly healthy with no reason to worry. I went into the appointment so excited, but I left feeling nervous and concerned. It took forever to get in to her this past year due to her maternity leave. When I asked to combine my annual with the preconception appointment and she really didn’t feel like doing both and tried to get me to reschedule another appointment. Again, I had to hold firm and she did both while I was there. This would have been my last appointment with her even if I didn’t need to switch doctors. For me, there are too many great doctors out there to invest time building a relationship with someone that makes me feel bad.

I like this doctor but 50 minutes wait for her in the examination room is unacceptable

One time only last year for annual since my on/gym moved to NJ. Decided to try one more time for my annual this year. Will see...I have to say she is very thorough but needs to improve bed manners especially when you don’t know the patient to begin with.

I went to see Dr. Mendiola last year as I had been looking for a gynecologist for quite some time after I changed my insurance and could no longer see my old gyno. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my visit with Dr. Mendiola. She seems nice at first but when she went over my chart she began to mock certain results and stats such as my weight and age. At the time I was 41 yrs. old and planning to get married in a few months. She asked if I planned on having a family where I said "I know I don't have too much time to think about it but at the moment yes, right after the wedding I will work on starting a family". In the meantime I wanted to continue being on my birth control. She refused to re-prescribe my BC plus said I didn't have time to waste as I should get pregnant right away due to my age. I was too old to think about it. She also questioned where I was planning to take my honeymoon once I mentioned one of my desired locations she quickly said that I should reconsider due to… Zika. I appreciated the advice except she didn't say it in a advisory tone. She quickly made me feel irresponsible for considering this particular honeymoon location (Bora Bora). I understood her concerns but she didn't express them in good manner. Plus I am aware I am overweight, she advised me to lose weight immediately. When I agreed that I am overweight she quickly corrected me to say "No, you are not overweight, you are obese!" I've never felt so bad about myself after a doctor's visit. Dr. Mendiola is a terrible and unprofessional physician, I do not recommend.

Made me feel terrible about myself and my choices, made me take tests that I asked not to have done, was overall just a rude and unprofessional doctor.

NYU Langone makes it impossible to reach doctors and schedule appointments. I have had to wait numerous hours -avoidably- for doctors to see me, including Mendiola. No respect for time or patient care.

She insisted I have tests I did not need. After I went to her and she insisted I needed more tests, I went to 2 more doctors to get their opinions and they said I did NOT need more tests. She even contacted my insurance company to get authorization to do more tests without consulting me. She does not listen and is very pushy.

Told me I was overweight in a very accusatory tone. I asked by how much. She said by 2 lbs. I told her I ran once a week. She said "so you're not a runner." Made me get a pregnancy test despite the fact there was 0% chance I was pregnant.
