Introduction
I have created this home page in order to introduce myself to my patients and prospective patients and to provide some useful medical information which I think complements my medical practice. I am a hospital based specialist in Internal Medicine, which means that most of the patients that I take care of are in the hospital rather than the medical clinic.
Please take some time to browse my biography, credentials, and other personal information here, or use the links on the left to explore medical information that I think is reliable and can often answer the questions that many of my patients ask me each day.
Biography:
I knew that I wanted to go into medicine since I was 5 years old. My mother was very sick when I was a child and I wanted to help her. Our family doctor, Dr. Cutcher, was a compassionate role model to me as were Dr. Marcus Welby and other TV doctors of that time.
In college I got a degree in electrical engineering along with my premedical studies, …because I really enjoyed science and math. I also found that I had a real interest in computers during this time. When I was fortunate enough to go to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine for my medical degree, I was pleased that this also turned out to be a great place to do research on using computers to improve medical practice. At the University of California, Los Angeles, I completed my medical training in internal medicine and also kept working on medical computing projects. I like the detective work involved in figuring out diagnoses and treating diseases, and I have always believed that computers can help us gather and analyze the wealth of information that modern medical practice relies on.
My first child, Sarah was born just as I completed my training at UCLA. My wife Debby and I decided that we wanted to raise our family in Northern California because of the tremendous diversity in cultural, recreational, and career opportunities in this region.
I came to Kaiser Permanente in 1993, because I wanted to practice in an environment where doctors were free to make the best medical decisions that they can without having to answer to administrators who have never practiced medicine. In addition to being an excellent place to practice top notch state-of-the-art medicine, I have been pleased to discover that Kaiser Permanente is a place where physicians can grow as leaders and have the opportunity to improve medical practice on a broader scale.
I currently serve as Associate Physician in Chief of the Diablo Area (Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Shadelands, Livermore, Martinez, Antioch Delta Fair, and Antioch Deer Valley), where I help lead the implementation and support of computerized systems that allow us to take are of our patients seamlessly, no matter which Kaiser Permanente facility you are seen at. I also now supervise 10 Clinical Departments that provide non-surgical specialty services to our patients - Allergy, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, and Pulmonary/Critical Care. If you have any feedback or issues with regard to those departments, please feel free to contact me.
My other medical affiliations include being a member of the American College of Physicians, the Alameda-Contra Costa County Medical Association, and the California Medical Association.
When I am not working hard, I like to play hard. I love to play basketball, lift weights, rollerblade, bicycle, watch movies, play pinball and video games, listen to music, and enjoy the company of my friends. Most of all I really like to spend time with my loving family, helping my kids to develop and exploring the many offerings of this region along with my beautiful wife Debby. Please see a some pictures of me and my family in action outside the hospital by clicking here to get to Dr. Levy's Photo Page.
