Dr. Gabriel, if you read this review, I want you to know that I'm impressed. Let's start with the reason why I sought you out for help. After doing extensive research on the best neurosurgeons in Tampa Bay, your name was at the top of the lists, which led me to make my decision. However, I won’t deny that I was a bit skeptical at first. My experience was unique. Although the waiting time during my first visit was a bit long, it was completely compensated by your professionalism. You took the time to listen to the history of my back problems and chose holistic solutions to begin my journey to relief. This was huge for me because I’ve already had back surgery, and from past experiences, I know that other doctors often push for surgery without even trying other methods first. You made it clear that if the time comes when we can no longer manage my issues, surgery might be necessary. I was not able to walk for 5 yrs until he did my surgery in 2011 I had the surgery Wed and was up walking that night. The decision I ever made. He is fantastic he gave me my life back.

This MD has ABOVE EXCELLENT neurosurgical skill. Dr. Gonzales-Portillo performed a(n) ACDF at 4 levels, C3,4,5,&6 on me. My C-Spine had degenerated to a place where the MRI showed spinal cord compression at all four levels. My results were nothing short of a miracle. The before and after MRI's tell the story. Wish I could post them here, but I carry photo copies with me to show anyone who asks about my neck scar. My profession is Registered Nurse, so I'm very particular about the doctors I choose. Forget all the "ease of appointment" etc Health Grade criteria. This doctor is the Neurosurgeon you WANT when you or a loved one is in need of VERY serious or LIFE threatening "brain" surgery.

The best. My mom was blessed to have him as her surgeon.

Dr. Gonzales-Portillo performed a craniotomy for me last year (2012) and I have been singing his praises ever since. I was a bit frightened about having my head opened up, but Dr. GP put me at ease, and his work was exceptional. Other doctors and imaging technicians said that my surgical scar was almost non-existent, and with their trained eyes, could say what a fine job Dr. GP did. I wish that Dr. GP was an internal medicine or general practitioner in addition to his speciality, so I could visit him as my family doctor! If five stars were an option, I would provide him five stars!

Dr. Gonzales-Portillo has surpassed my opinion, of what one should seek, when finding a neurosurgeon. I had seen two other surgeons, prior to choosing Dr. Gonzales-Portillo to perform, a very complicated cervical spine surgery. It has been two months, and I am very pleased with my results. I still have some time to go, with the healing, but minimal pain. I am following the doctor's orders and not lifing more than I should, etc. I never knew I could be this "pain free". I think Dr. Gonzales-Portillo is very thorough in his exams, but I also try to be prepared with questions, etc, to not take up his valuable time.

Overall the surgery was a success however in the follow-up appt he did not show patience and tried to hurry the seession up. I felt as though he was not hearing what i had to say about the disconfort at post- op.
