Waited 3 hours to “see” the doctor just to wait another hour and was told to choose if I wanted surgery! Not if I medically needed it. He disregarded radiology reports and made his own decision. The best he could offer was to have me see a colleague of his.

I have been a patient in three New York City specialty hospitals and Dr. Coleman is the finest surgeon I have ever had. Additionally, he is approachable and pleasant - with the desire to diagnose and treat patients, making them well again.

After being diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma in NJ, I sought a top notch surgeon for a second opinion and subsequent surgery. An oncology research friend helped me search; I was willing to go anywhere in the country to see the right surgeon. We found Dr. Coleman right in my backyard. Jonathan Coleman evaluated my scans/tests and was quite definitive re: the optimal course of treatment: partial nephrectomy using the Da Vinci robot. During the initial visit and consultation, his fellow took a thorough medical history and performed a thorough exam. Dr. Coleman patiently explained the status of my disease, various treatments available and patiently discussed why he felt his recommended course of action was optimal. I would not say Dr. Coleman's bedside manner was "touchy-feely", but I was there for top notch clinical care; hand holding was secondary. Dr. Coleman explained the purpose of each pre-op test scheduled over the next few weeks and his nurse carefully explained how I was to… prepare for surgery. Thorough and professional. BTW, I waited 45 minutes after arriving for the inital consultation, but for me, that was inconsequential, considering the importance of the issue. Subsequent to the first consultation, I was reminded about pre-op appointments by his staff and via the web in a timely manner. The web site is easy to navigate. All pre op testing was handled professionally and waiting time was minimal. Surgery day was organized to a "T". Fellows explained each step, the surgical team seemed focused and serious. Nurses briefed my relatives halfway through the 4.5 hour surgery and Dr. Coleman personally communicated a thorough post-op recap and likely prognosis, pending pathology, to my relatives. He visited me bedside about four hours after surgery and patiently answered all my questions. He personally called me with the (very encouraging) pathology results six days later. The day after surgery (discharge day) was a tad uncomfortable, but adequate medication was provided. I was able to walk around the hospital floor eight hours after surgery and was walking outdoors at home three days after surgery. Felt much better after a week. I would classify the physical trauma related to my laproscopic procedure as "minimal". Four weeks later, Dr. Coleman removed the stent and patiently explained the follow up process and answered other questions I had. I am confident I made the right decision seeing Dr. Coleman and would recommend him without hesitation.

Dr. Coleman is an expert in his field and a caring medical professional. When I sought an expert for very rare type of bladder tumor, Dr. Coleman was the doctor I found and ultimately selected for treatment. I am not a resident of New York, but I'm happy to travel there for annual follow-ups with Dr. Coleman. While I might have to wait a bit for my appointments with Dr. Coleman, I remind myself that he's busy helping others with potentially life-threatening illnesses. His expertise is more than worth the wait.
