Dr. Julia Chu Tchou, MD

I went to see Dr. Chu Tchou for a second opinion. Upon meeting Dr, Chu Tchou, she was warm, concerning, and had a bit of sense of humor. She listened to my concerns and helped me come to a conclusion for my problem. On the day of surgery, she greeted me with a smile and talked to me about my procedure. She give me a surgical scare that had dignity. I saw her for 7yrs of my post-cancer journey. I don’t live in Philadelphia, but I would continue to travel to Philadelphia to see her because she was the best experience for me.

Dr. Tchou is a world-class, mega-talented brilliant breast surgeon, who is respectful and has emotional intelligence off the charts (huge heart!).. If I could give her ten stars I would. I would not be shocked if institution offers her double what to steal her away. I hope UPENN C Suite/Admins are smart enough to give her raise and huge bonus. It’s sad when these top national institutions so grossly underpay their doctors and nurses.

I initially went to Dr. Tchou for a second opinion on my breast cancer diagnosis. I just immediately trusted her, respected her and appreciated her kindness and care. I transferred my healthcare to Penn Medicine because of her and her staff. Penn Medicine found additional findings on my MRI that MLH didn’t find. I also had a genetic mutation (testing that Dr. Tchou expedited for me) that informed our decision. The course of treatment was a double mastectomy. Any time I had a question or concern, Dr. Tchou and her staff responded so quickly and thoroughly and kindly. She goes ABOVE and BEYOND. I am really glad that she was my breast cancer surgeon – even just emotionally supportive. When I was having problems with my left breast post surgery (plastic surgery issue), she fit me into her busy schedule and gave me information about what was going on. This information allowed me to move forward in getting healthy and moving beyond breast cancer. You will be treated like a human being by Dr.… Tchou and ALL of her staff. That part of care is just *really* important when you’re getting the worse news of your life and losing your breasts on top of it. I would only recommend a plastic surgeon outside of Penn Medicine. That experience was not great and that is who you will be working with post-surgery.

Tried to get help, She looked at my lump in my brest and said in (broken English )and said you are too far advanced I cannot help you.I then found another hospital. Thank God!! I am now doing great.No thanks to this Doctor.

Dr. Tchou has a very poor bedside manner with patients and is not friendly

Dr. Tchou was recommended by another patient who absolutely loved her. I checked out her background and was very impresses with her credentials. I also met with 3 top docs in Philly. The moment I met Dr Tchou I knew I had met the doctor that I had been looking for. She is so sweet, caring and patient. She answered every one of my million questions with a smile and with the ultimate patience. She did a remarkable surgery with careful follow up. I have never heard anything but praises for Dr. Tchao, and she is also recommended by physicians. I am so fortunate that Dr. Tchou was recommended to me. I will be eternally grateful to her for her pre-op consultations and the excellent surgery she did. Dr. Tchou is the absolute best. I hope and pray that she enjoys good health because she makes such a difference in the lives of so many women..

Have Benin following with Dr. Tchou for years. Had a breast mass got a second opinion. Elected to go with Dr. Tchou for my surgery. She missed findings in other breast that other breast surgeon saw. She rushes and wants you out of her office so she can bill for more patients. I should have gone with the second surgeon.

I saw her as a second opinion. After making me wait and sending a resident physician in first (I didn't come to see to a resident physician), she belittled the other surgeon I saw and told me she is a much better surgeon and should only come to her. She had a condescending tone and brushed me off when I asked questions. Needless to say I will NOT be going back to her and her rude ways. I will go with my original surgeon who was kind and compassionate. I don't know where she gets these great reviews. She needs to take a class on how to treat patients with respect and dignity and not treat us like we are stupid. Also, the total time she spent with me was 5-10 minutes yet she billed my insurance for a full consult.

I am sure she is an excellent surgeon but offers little in the way of info. Ex, How will your breast heal. Some of people working around seem confused .Other respondent correct she can walk in 3/4 hr late and not apologize. Nice person Just caught up with her surgery and not a great communicator.Though her drawers are great.

Dr. Tchou is an exceptional doctor and person. I have never met a doctor with better bedside manner. She knows my childrens' names and interests and she has called me at home to offer words of reassurance when she didn't have to. She truly put me at ease during one of the most frightening times in my life. She couldn't be any farther away from "robotic."
