Dr. Maria Pence

dr pence was ok in the meeting before my surgery. I came out of the surgery in pain and she belittled me for saying I was in pain and told me one of her patients had the same surgery and hosted a large party that same night. The follow up visit, she breezed into the room, told me the results and said I needed to follow the oncologists recommendation that I take a newly introduced medicine for the rest of my life and that would decrease my chances of dying of cancer by the time I was 90. When I asked questions about the adverse effects she was brusque and within the next minute concluded the meeting by walking out of the room. So my review of dr. Pence is that I would never go back and never recommend her. She has no bedside manner, she comes across as offended that anyone doesn't take what comes out of her mouth as gospel direct from on high. Maybe she treats wealthy people differently so if you have the bling, give it a whirl.

Dr. Pence and her staff where amazing and kind . I know she saved my life . I will be forever thankful .

I observe dr pence as a very brilliant scientific based thinker. I see her wheels spinning when reviewing my personal breast complications. When I ask questions and actively participate in my care. Bc that's my job as a patient. Not hers. We sit there together brainstorm. Predict. And review my breast pathology or mammo. She explains everything. Using my info from radiology. Refers me for testing if needed. Always shakes my hand when walking in the room. With a big smile. I'm not afraid. And I really feel that makes the difference and can seriously change a patients experience. I've had different cancer and more surgeries than u can imagine. Since 2007. The more background information a patient can acquire as they enter into a relationship. Asking questions. Letting a doctor know what you need. Saying. I need support if u feel you do. Can really change the experience. Dr pence has not operated on me as of yet. I would totally trust her. Why. Bc she is very into research. Technique… and excellent precision from all the breast patients I know who worked with her. I've seen their scars. And survival.!! Many women are so frozen by their fear. And I get it. I used to be as well. The more the patient warms up. And is less frightened the better their experience with any surgeon. Personally. I couldn't imagine anything but a top score for this brilliant compassionate teaching surgeon. I feel she is warm and friendly. When I ask good questions. Her eyes light up. ! When I think of dr pence. I see her smile first. Handshake and expert care. !!

Dr Pense very insensitive. She read my Biopsy results wrong, and when i corrected her (a previous dr told me the correct results), she told me that she felt like she was being "confronted," instead of apologizing. she happened to also say that she "breezily looked through my files." I guess that was her professional reason why she didn't know what she was talking about?!? she was extremely flustered when i asked her questions and she told me that she thought i may be happier going elsewhere! i have read others complaining about her awful bedside manner, but this is over and beyond disgusting behavior.

Dr. Pence did a very good surgery for cancer on my wife so no problems there. The issues are in her manner (lacking warmth and empathy) and her failure to anticipate and even talk about the need for physical therapy post-operatively. Basic questions never seem to be answered clearly or directly. My wife is made to feel as if her treatment choices (well-informed btw) are somehow wrong. Not a way to promote good will or health.

Dr. Pence performed a lumpectomy on me.First she did a biopsy and was very solicitous of my physical and emotional well being. After the biopsy, she had to deliver the news to me that I had cancer and was very caring when she did so. She spent as much time as I needed her to discussing treatment and options. She did an excellent job on the surgery - I know this to be true because the cosmetic result was excellent and even my radiation oncologist remarked on how careful and neat her technique was (she added that she sees women form many different surgeons and often the result is not nearly as good). My surgery was 7 yrs. ago and Dr. Pence is still following up with me. She continues to do battle with the insurance company to approve additional diagnostic preventative tests. She is very sincere in her concern for her patients. I doubt you could go to a better breast surgeon.

Dr. Pence is what you want in a surgeon, she is thorough and communicates effectively. Not to mention, you gotta love a doctor who operates on you wearing three strands of pearls! Seriously, she's the best. Felt better after the surgery than I had with the prior biopsies, more discomfort than pain but very manageable.

Prior to meeting Dr. Pense, I read her rating on vitals.com and based on the previous review, I was concerned about having her as a surgeon. I am so glad I didn't listen. She was extremely knowledgeable, empathetic and had a perfectly acceptable bedside manner. I recently had surgery and a follow up visit with her. Her staff were professional and friendly. She was available to take my calls and did an thorough job discussing prognosis and treatment. I would feel comfortable recommending her to anyone else in the area that is looking for a good breast surgeon. I want my doctor to be an competent and skilled surgeon first and a caring person second. Fortunately, Dr. Pense is both.

I went to Dr. Pense a couple of years ago and was intimidated about speaking up. I did not end up using her as my surgeon in the end b/c she was so cold and uncaring. She may be an excellent surgeon, but I ended up finding someone excellent with an excellent manner as well. When someone is worried they have a pathology/cancer - their doctor should be understanding and kind. She was neither. I'm sorry I didn't have the guts to tell her when she called to ask me why I'd switched doctors and hospitals and I hope that over time she's changed her manner - but remember everyone - you have a choice!
