Dr. Michael E Sekela, MD

My husband was airlifted to the UK hospital Lexington KY for endocarditis. The first day he was there he saw Dr. Sekela. Then he didn't see him again for over two weeks!! All the other doctors came and checked on my husband twice a day, and would update me on his condition (I slept in the same room with him and never left the hospital). He was in serious condition. He ended up getting blood clots while laying in bed, the vascular surgeon was willing to operate on him but he had to wait on Sekala's opinion in order to operate safely. EVERY DAY the other Drs would call Dr. Sekela's office to try to get him to come see my husband and to at least give me a status update, sometimes twice a day they would call. He would never return the calls or give a status update. The nursing department finally filed a complaint against Dr. Sekela. Finally the day after the complaint was filed he came to see my husband. Then he proceeded to tell me that there were 2 iv drug users that had the same… condition as my husband. I told him my husband was NOT an iv drug user, he got it from a dialysis treatment. He said "oh I know that...but they are in better condition than your husband so I'm going to operate on them instead"!!!! I had no choice but to put my husband on Hospice and let him pass on. My husband should have been seen on a regular basis, phone calls should have been answered from the other drs, I should have been updated about his condition and he should have never said what he said. If he didn't want to operate on my husband because of the risk or something that's one thing, but to tell me you were going to operate on 2 drug users instead is down right appalling. I have waited 8 months to right this review. I didn't want to do it while I was still in shock, and I didn't want to do it out of anger, so I allowed myself to heal somewhat. I will never forgive him for what he did and in my opinion everyone needs to know just how horrible he handled the whole situation.

I was referred to Dr. Michael Sekela, by Dr. John Gurley, and I am Blessed that he referred me to this kind, skilled and dedicated surgeon. Dr. Sekela performed 5 bypass grafts on my heart, and patched a 1.9 cm. Primum atrial septal defect hole inside my heart. Dr. Sekela is tops in his field, and I was fortunate to have him as my Cardiac surgeon! I cannot say enough good about this man, and although I hope I never have a future need for his skills, if I did, he would always be my first choice! He is outstanding!

If needed I Would certainly choose Dr. Sekela again for me or my family. He is a very gifted and caring doctor. I'm more than certain after my Mitral Valve robotic assisted surgery I could not have gotten any better care in Cleveland or anywhere else. As a matter of fact I'm certain I would not have gotten a surgeon with the experience as Dr. Sekela has. Thank the Lord for using the hands of fine, caring doctors like Dr. Sekela.

Dr. Sekela is extremely proficient and considered by many (including the nurses at the hospital) as one of the best out there. Spends time, thorough, etc.. However, his staff, particularly the office manager, does not return calls or follow thru. Also, his PA told me I no longer have a murmur and an hour later, my cardiologist said it would always be there, just very subtle (something I've known from previous surgeries).

Dr. Sekela is thorough, reassuring and patient. His skill is well known and this gives a pt confidence during a stressful time. He did a great job with my surgery. His office staff, however, is that type where the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing...doesn't return calls, etc... .

I cannot thank Dr. Sekela enough for the lifesaving aortic aneurysm/aortic valve surgery that he performed on me Feb. 6th 2012, God through the gifted and talented skills of this kind Dr., saved my life.If anyone with an ascending aortic aneurysm, please don't hesitate to have a consult with this kind Doc. He will listen to your concerns and answer your questions, all the while making you feel very confident that this is going to be o.k.My wife and I both knew within 10 minutes of my consult that he would be the Surgeon to repair my aorta. He is a very confident surgeon and that confidence oozes while speaking with him, and with this surgery you want someone experienced and confident.....he is both. We no longer felt we needed to go to Cleveland Clinic.Thank You Dr. Sekela, God is using you to save lives.

Was not impressed with the way things have been handled would not recommend the hospital and maybe even the doctor. Sending his people in instead of him self.

I talked to many drs. and patients, who needed the same type of surgery, and now agree with all the good things they had to say about Dr. Sekela. I had an aortic anneurysm at the time of diagnosis, which was detected during a chest x-ray. My time spent with him could not have been better. Dr. Sekela, while always professional and ever so knowledgeable, made me feel at ease during a time when I thought I was coming undone. He displayed his great sense of humor which I needed then. I had to end up having the anneurysm repaired and also the replacement of my aortic valve with a pig valve, and I did just fine with no problems whatsoever. While I was in the hospital, I looked forward to his visits with me and he never missed a day. It wasn't like he would send someone from his staff to check on me, he would be there himself. Dr. Sekela saved my life so you can see why I think so highly of him. I was considering going to the Cleveland Clinic for this surgery but was so glad I chose Dr.… Sekela because he is the most knowledgable and competent surgeon I could have ever hoped to have found. Also, my stay at St. Jospeph was way more than I expected because the nurses on that floor are the best of the bunch and were absolutely wonderful to me. Were I ever to have heart surgery again, I would definitely choose Dr. Sekela to be my surgeon. I have recommended him to several people who ended up agreeing with me that he was also the best surgeon they could have found.
