Dr. Paresh C Shah, MD

Dr. Shah’s reputation as a surgeon is stellar, and it obviously went to his head some time ago. I consulted with Dr. Shah about a gallbladder surgery. During my appointment, Dr. Shah and his PA were cold, indifferent, and dismissive. It’s not unusual to occasionally encounter surgeons like this, unfortunately. Most significantly, the scan that Dr. Shah requested I take and submit to him had an accompanying warning notice, stating that I had a nodule on my lung that needed to be examined. Not being familiar with scans, I wasn’t aware of the warning notice. Another doctor I brought the same exact scan to for a second opinion immediately noticed the warning notice, and insisted that I see a lung specialist. Guess what? I had cancer. After surgery and some follow up, I’m fine, as of now. But no matter how good a surgeon may be, do you really want a cold, indifferent doctor and assistant who are so self absorbed that they don’t bother to notice their patient is at risk for a life… threatening illness?

I recently had a procedure with Dr. Shah at NYU medical center and I could not have been in better hands! He explained everything for my plan of care, has an incredible bedside manner and his professionalism is unsurpassed. I would highly recommend him to anyone in need of gastrointestinal surgery.

Dr. Shah is considered to be an excellent surgeon by his peers. I spent the better part of my appointment with his PA, Joanne, who was cold, indifferent, and inattentive. After I was kept waiting for 40 minutes for Dr. Shah in an examination room, he made an appearance. He did apologize for his lateness. He spent about 5 minutes on our consultation. He discouraged me from having the surgery I very much felt was necessary. He instructed me to have a scan taken, and very curtly said he would give his final opinion after looking at the scan. After having a scan taken, I received a voicemail message from Dr. Shah's PA Joanne, who said the doctor did not recommend surgery at the time. It was a demoralizing and insensitive way to treat a patient. I decided to bring the scan to a consultation with another general surgeon. The second general surgeon immediately told me that the scan had come with a report stating that there was a suspicious nodule on one of my lungs (unrelated to the… problem I was consulting with Dr. Shah on, but still very clearly stated on the scan and the written report accompanying it). I had not seen the written report, but the NYU imaging lab and Dr. Shah and his staff had . The second general surgeon I consulted with insisted I see a lung specialist at his hospital, which I did. It turned out the nodule was cancerous, and I needed to have surgery to have it removed, as soon as possible. I am happy to report that the surgery was a success, and I am regularly (and very happily) a pateient of the second general surgeon I consulted with, and have been regularly checking in for for exams with the lung surgeon who attended to the cancerous nodule. Dr. Shah and his PA were sloppy, neglectful, and irresponsible in their treatment. Their terrible bedside manner and lack of expertise leaves an tremendous amount to be desired.

I went for an initial surgical consultation. He spent his time with me and answered all my concerns. There was no rush to make critical decisions on the spot. In fact, he recommended I think about everything and come back in a month.

Met with Dr Shah for consultation and he and his staff were extremely courteous. Dr. Shah spent considerable time with me explaining my condition and options for surgery.

He saved my life.! He is a brilliant surgeon, and is highly regarded by the hospital staff , from doctors, to nurses, to nurses assistants, to medical students.

This was my first surgical experience and the care provided by Dr. Shah and his team were way and above what I could have expected. They were courteous and considerate every step of the way.
