Dr. Robert Edson Hawkins, MD

The bottom line is that Dr. Hawkins treated my husband and myself in a manner both arrogant and insensitive, leaving me relieved that we will not be needing his services as a surgeon. We met with Dr Hawkins for a consult, after an ultrasound two days previously. As he walked in he said: "unfortunately, your results are completely normal." From our perspective that was good news, not bad - it ruled out one possible concerning source of his leg pain. Why present it in a negative light? In responding to Dr. Hawkins' questions about his pain, my husband answered that he knew some of it was neuropathy - a diagnosis he has been given by other specialists. Dr. Hawkins interrupted him abruptly, and rudely, to say that he wanted to hear a description of the pain, not a diagnosis. While I understand his motives, he could have explained them in a way that fostered connection, rather than creating distance. He could have said, for example: "It would be more helpful to me if you could describe the… pain for me. I know other doctors have already given it a diagnosis, but I'd like a fresh start, so that I can reach my own conclusions" Finally, Dr. Hawkins wanted my husband to lie down so that he could examine his legs. He knew that my husband had had recent back surgery, from which he was still recovering, and yet was both insistent and impatient as my husband eased himself back into a prone position with some considerable pain. Even my explicit reminder to him that this was painful for my husband given the recent surgery, and that lying on the table for the ultrasound two days before had left him in increased pain, did nothing to alter his behavior or increase his sensitivity. I am not in a position to review Dr. Hawkins' skills as a surgeon, but his 'bedside manner,' at least during our visit, left much to be desired and my husband with some new back pain.

Dr. Hawkins is the best vascular surgeon I've know. I would like for him to know that I am pleased he was my surgeon.

Saved my life, literally. I was extremely lucky Dr. Hawkins was on call the evening my abdominal aortic aneurysm burst. In addition to his superb surgical skills, he is a super person and a pleasure to have as a physician

Dr. Hawkins is fantastic in my book. He tells you what the problems are...what you need to do...what he will and will not do...and cares about his patients and it is genuine. The office staff is wonderful and always helpful! You can't go wrong with my doctor.....I have spent alot of time with him over the last few years!
