"Who, Who, Who" Is he a doctor or an owl?

I am one of those "complicated", multi-surgical patients. My understanding was that Dr. Raikin was someone who might take on these types of patients. I have three surgeons who want to do three different types of surgeries on my foot, cuneiform fusion vs cotton osteotomy w/ FDL transfer vs lapidus osteotomy. Given that I have had a few surgeries, let's just say I tend to be overly cautious and really try to understand how each of the proposed surgeries differ. Wouldn't it be nice to have two doctors propose the same surgery? I was hoping for at minimum some clarification/insight from Dr. Raikin on the surgeries suggested to me and how they varied. Instead, it was clear that he didn't want to get involved and I believe was a little too interested in finding out who did each of my surgeries, rather than explaining the impact of one osteotomy over the other. One of the surgeons who had proposed surgery went over the angle of my foot (Meary's angle) and another did something similar explaining how medial column rotated when I put weight on the foot, thus causing a domino effect. I was hoping for something like this from Dr. Raikin, especially since I had travelled for his opinion and he has authored so many publications. Unfortunately he only suggested a brace. I'm fine with him not taking me on surgically, but I had hoped for some clarification on the differences between the surgeries proposed to me, which he was unable to do. I wish doctors would not ask patients "who, who, who" did their surgeries. I stinks of politics. In my experience, the doctors who do not ask "who", but instead "what" have been much more willing to help a complicated patient. This was a waste of a day for me.

Dr Raikin is an expert in his field. Rothman is affiliated with Thomas Jefferson Hospital and Medical school, as such it is understood that medical students and or MD's some in residency may see you. Many patients seeing Dr. Raikin have been referred due to complex, acute or can no longer use conservative treatment and require surgery. I saw Dr. Rankin after a Resident gathered my history and personal notes. This office also had me x rayed right away. Both practices save time for both patient and physician. Dr. Rankin saw me, he is personable, professional and proficient. He zeroed in on my end stage arthritis, treatment record and quickly concluded I am a candidate for replacement surgery. His option was direct and he expressed what needed to be done. Dr. Raikin also described all treatments possible. My next visit was a follow-up where he re-checked my status, discussed all options including surgery. I have struggled for 15 years and I have extreme pain and very limited mobility. Dr. Rankin has high expectations and gives specific directions for the best results possible. He is protective of his patients and his excellent reputation is a result. I understand what is expected of me and that I have a surgeon who is one of the very best in his field

It's been just over a month since I had surgery to reattach my Achilles tendon, which ruptured and shortened after several years of chronic issues. Because of the missing portion, a tendon from my toe was used to help bridge the gap. While I am still on crutches, and expect recovery to be somewhat protracted. I am healing very quickly, and am very pleased with the progress so far. While Dr. Raikin indicated that full recover may take upwards of a year, given the rapidity with which I am healing, I am optimistic about the prospects of returning to my previous level of physical activity, and am thankful for having chosen such an experienced surgeon.

Overrated

Dr. Raikin is only good if he's given the information that surgery is needed and he doesn't have to make any diagnosis himself. Without that information, he's actually pathetically clueless. In my opinion, he's just incredibly overrated as is the Rothman Institute in general. They really just want your money here. I'm not saying he is a bad doctor, he's just very very overrated and you can probably find similar care from other doctors.

Raikin Rocks!

I had a jet ski accident and was referred to Dr. Rakin by a friend. I am so glad I went. He has a great personality. He knows when to be serious and when to joke around. He is very professional and knows his stuff. I had a lis franc dislocation/fracture and I'm over weight. He stressed to me the importance of following his directions. I have followed them to a T. I am now 7 weeks post op and starting to bear weight and I have no pain at all. I'd recommend Dr. Rakin in a heartbeart.
