Specialties

Dr. Terako S Amison has the following 2 specialties

  • Psychiatry

A psychiatrist is a doctor with specific training in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
He or she can not only provide the counseling necessary to both diagnose and treat a patient, but can also prescribe medication when needed. In some cases, a psychiatrist will only provide the medication and the counseling will be provided by another healthcare specialist, like a certified counselor or psychologist.
Like other doctors, psychiatrists employ diagnostic tools like CT scans and MRI in order to observe the structure and function of a patient's brain.
Once a diagnosis is made, these specialists may use behavior or cognitive therapy in order to address the patient's condition, or a multitude of other types of therapy, in conjunction with or in place of medication.

  • Neurology

A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.
Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease.
In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.

Vanderbilt Psych: Another Disappoint

I first went to Dr. Amison on a therapist's referral in hopes of getting fresh eyes on a stale diagnosis. Rather than consider my situation anew, she piggy-backed her assessment off of a previous psychiatrist's (...a psych who'd also diagnosed me based on the assessment of a previous shrink-- one who'd I'd met just once, for 45 minutes, years before being seen @ Vanderbilt.) Not only was she dismissive of my feelings/reasons for being suicidal, but Dr Amison literally chuckled after I shared the list of hardships I've been struggling with personally (i.e. being lonely & isolated, infertility, not being able to complete higher education, work problems, etc.) saying she didn't see why those things couldn't change for me with time but COMPLETELY neglecting to share any insight into how to go about improving my disposition or what treatment could help. No guidance on what course of treatment She had absolutely no "bedside manner." I left her office feeling more defeated and hopeless than I have in over a year. After working so hard to find a provider who makes an effort to see the patient beyond their family history & diagnosis, Dr. Amison was no exception to the rule. It's a shame that such a wonderful facility with great programs & a 5-star staff overall, has such dissapointing psychiatrists. In my assessment, Dr. A's skills would be better utilized in a classroom rather than a clinic.
