First off, I want to say that Dr Burcher is probably one of the funniest doctor’s I’ve ever met in her field, so it pains me to have to write this review. This is also a review of the Crozier system overall. Even with quality doctors, the overall culture is inflexible and less focused on the humanness you’d associate with a healthcare institution, and more focused on business and $$.
In Dr Burcher’s case, the dispute was only over 30.00, but for me it was more than that. As a sexual assault survivor it is very important for me to find caring professionals, especially in the area of women’s health. I take issue with unnecessary exams, invasive procedures that are not required, and oftentimes being regulated to ‘subject’ versus partner in my own “girl” health. So I was not as well mannered when I encountered the total lack of humanness that I received after my visit with Dr Burcher.
I was told that the only diaphragm I could get, would require a fitting, so I was scheduled to see… Dr. Burcher. I came in for that and no other purpose. I cannot take hormonal birth control, and I’ve tried all the other methods. I was assured that once fitted, it would be ordered and if I didn’t get a call in a couple weeks, to call back. After a few calls and several weeks, I was told that they are no longer made, and that was it! No offer to see if there where other options of diaphragms out there, no sorry, no nothing. However I did receive a bill for office visit, which I contested because I was paying for a service that they should have known they could not offer. It is their responsibility to ensure that they can provide what they are fitting me for, and it was irresponsible to put someone through a very intimate and unnecessary fitting without doing so.
Long story short, after several calls, and lots of frustration (which also triggered my history of assault, as every woman knows it’s a vulnerable position we are in with our doctors and we put a lot of trust in them) I was told that the services were rendered and that was that.
Meanwhile I went to Planned Parenthood that was able to get me several diaphragms on the same day with no fitting needed, and were just as pleasant, and way more understanding. They also refunded my fee, which I ended up paying Dr Burcher with. It’s not the same product, but they counseled me well about the option that I did have, and what’s more, they gave me an option and provided the service that Dr. Burcher probably could have done, but didn’t.
Anyhow…..I highly recommend that you seek another professional. It may be the Crozier system, as many other people have had issue with their billing, but Dr Burcher could have offered the same humanness with a follow up, that she did with the initial exam. Consistency is key, and that didn’t happen here.
Also, I was asked by the billing person I talked to, Helen, not to write this review given the Covid situation. My experience should not be overlooked just because greater impact is being placed on the health care institution. If anything, it should highlight exactly what I am saying, that we need a more human approach than a business/financial one – especially in these times. Unethical is unethical. As long as people have a choice in who they see and where they can go, they should know all the facts to make the best decisions for themselves, pandemic or not.
